FINANCE AND TRADE
Owner. or Prrrsrarson GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, February 6, 1868. S
The movement in the gold room on
Saturday would 'indicate that gold has
touched its lowest point at 135, but if the
large demand, for our bonds from Eu
rope and , the heavy shipments by bank
era and speculators for shipment to Eu
rope on speculative accounts can be re
lied, upon, lower quotations will have
to bp map-during tins week and geld
would range law for all this' month.
The export movement of produce, cotton
and oil is gaining in volume daily, but it
is difficult to make an exact estimate of
it. The difficulty lies in the general be
lief that the figures published in the daily
New York Press represent the entire,
or nearly. so, export and import
t,move
ments, whilst the most valuable cargoes
go out from New Orleans, Lobito, Char
leston, Saltithore and Phil delphia, and
the imports for merOhandize are mostly
confined to 'New York. Taking every
thing into consideration, the chances for
a material rise in gold are rather slim,
we mean beyond the limits of an ordina
ry broker's commission. The funds mar
ket is also in a condition that we may
soon expect a heavy re:lotion. and should
the gOvernment, as it . always has done
for the past flaw years ; sell its gold when
the market Was 'least in a condition to
take it at what it was worth in Currency,
then' e must look to a lower premium,
despite the unfavorable trade balance.
Speculators who based their calculations
for arise, more on the prospects of a Eu
ropean war, must certainly have lost con
fidence in higher quotations from-more
natural causes nearer home to resort
to rumors of Napoleon's death and the
like, and are selling short.
government bonds have rallied dur
ing 1 the past week about % per cent.,
with an active market, but it seems the
old stories are called up again to gal
vanize the market after this handsome
advance, with an unusual demand for
bonds from banks and saving institu
tions, and a large demand for liCarope.
The turning point is likely to came this
week again, when after short sales are
covered, another attack will be made.
The best proof that saving institutions
or parties for permanent investment do
not buy at present, is in the fact that
1864 bonds, with one per cent. more gold
interest accrued than 1885 Consols, sell
at but % to % per cent. currency differ
ence. Even at one per cent. it would be
a. gain of seventy cents per hundred in
favor of 1864'5.
Stocks have fluctuated violently for
the past week on account of the failure
of the Erie combination to control the
Fort Wayne Railroad, with a view of
obtaining valuable leases of links in
roads leading to the great Pacific roads;
Erie stock declined from 138% to 135%,
and all the eonueoting roads, the shares
of which are held by the Erie manage
ment, suffered a decline from 2 to 3 per
cent.; which was partially recovered. New
York Centratfluctuated from 160 to 165.
Express shares were strong, and have
advanced from 15 to 20 per cent.
Money is easy on call for.prime col
laterals and No. 1 business paper. Busi
ness is still very dull snktlepressed.

—lt is said that the Congressional
House Committee on Banks and Curren
cy have,' after some debate, agreed to
favorably report and urge the paaaage of
Mr.. Boutwell's bill; vhich provides that
'hereafter no perointage; deduction, cam-
mission or compensation of any kind
shall be allowed to any person for the
sale, registration, or ex change of any (
Goveinment bonds,., gold or securities;
and hereafter, all sales and exchanges •
shall be made at public auction after ad ,
vertising. They also took such action onli '
the question of redissributing the nation
al bank circulation as inditates that they
are pretty certain to agree to the division
of the:banks into four classes, viz:—Tnose
with a circulation not over $200,000
those with over $200,000 and not over .
$500,000; those with over $200,000 and not •
over $31,000,000, and those with ()vex. ,
$1,000,000. The rates of circulation to be
respectively eighty per cent., seventy
percent., sixty percent. and fifty per '
cent.,-wbtth &proviso that no bank shall •
have over $1,000,000 of circulation. This
change, it is estimated, will give about
$19,000,000 for distrioution,to new banks •
in the South and West.

PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, t
SATURDAY, February 6, 1869:
WEEELY REVIEW.
The oil market was comparatively
quiet during the first tbreelor four days !
of the week, and while there was no
break, and but little indications of any,
the volume of business was light, and
prices were stationary. Yesterday and
to-day, however, a decidedly stronger
feeling sprung up, and Refined for al-
most any delivery within the next five
months, advanced a full cent; the do
mand seems to be most urgent for Feb- •
rtiary, as it is thought' there is a good
deal of oil sold short for this month, and
that if the '"shgrts" go on the market to
buy the price `; must, of necessity, go
higher. The short supply and high
price" theory is; therefore, stronger than
it was at the opening of the week, while,
on the contrary, the advocates of a reac
tion and decline are weaker, though
they still have an abiding faith that their
time is coming. They are still very
sanguine that with the spirit of develop
went that'now prevails, the production
will,and must be considerably increased,
and that with an increased production, a
decline is inevitable. And after all, the
whole thing hinges on this very point,
and, as a consequence, there is more
anxiety to hear from the oil country
than has been manifested for some years.
CRUDE. •

inquiry for early deliveries, and prices
are fully sustained. We can report
