efforts to confoim 'their lives to the light

much charity by Christians of the present

Ili this work we have embodied the re-

which the topics of moral philosophy and
the'avidences of Christianity have been
carefully elaborated, with a view to in

BLEKDPITS. A story of Scottish Life.
Published by G. P. Patnam ttt. Son,
New - York; For sale of R. S. Davis.
Pittsburgh.
It is a relief these days' to read a novel
of such , a matter-of-fact diameter as
"Blindpits," instead of one of the sensa
tional
noveli teeming from the press. At
the time this story first appeared in Scot
' land it created considerable Interest, and
; elicited high enconiums. The Put
' mini have reprinted the book by special
• arrangements with the Edinburg pub
lishers. Its length is objectionable to
some, but the_main characters are so well
drawn, and the plot so well executed
that pgsons who. commence its
'reading, will likely be so fascinated as to
be indUced to read it through.

description of men and things, are life

MA7OII JONES' SCENES IN GEORGIA.. By
the author of Major Jones's Courtship,
etc. Published by T. 8., Peterson &
Brother% Philadelphia. For sale by
W.A. Gildenfenny,,Pittsburgh.
Doubtless many of our' readers have
seen some of the articles in this humorous
work. Like the "Swamp
and
Ad
ventures," it is - full of fun and grotesque
and absurd incidents. Society, in Some
portibns of the South, in , by-gone years,
was in rather a crude , stat 6, and the ad
ventures described, comic es' they may
appear, have some show of truth. The
author being a. resident of the "Sunny
Smith," and conversant with the society
of which be wrote, it is to be expected
'that he would.be perfectly familiar with
the "scenes" depicted. The numerous
illustrations, by. Darley, are in keeping
with the text. -
