T±IURSD4I% February 4, 1869.
The recommendation by a majority of
the Finance Committee to introduce the
resolution to pay the national debt in
coin whenever paid, had the effect of
depressing the price of gold to 145 X, and
weak at that;' , :iihtioagh at the close
135% was bid. What effect this will
have in Europe on our bonds remains
to be seen;. should gold at once decline
a point ;or two . "Ettrapesnia Would, not
likely come In as pificliarsera of bonds,
but a sharp rally at least would set in
froin, the immense amounts of gold sold
short, and the natural tendency to run
up the market to at least 137 would be
followed by heavy purchases of bonds
by Europeans as nermanent inyesttnent,
when exchange would' become cheap
and, gold decline. The payment of
about seven millions of coupons on
=
March nexi and.the Change of thi"Chief
of the nation would also inspire more
confidence in Europe, so that despite
the heavy balance of trado against us
would go lower, although rapid 'fluctua
tions would carry the price,.perhaps to
140 and more. After a reaction in stocks
we may look for some grand speculation
in gold, and before the end of this
month fluctuations may be as vide apart
as 5 per cent.
The goverment bond market is strong,
and his 'advanced about One' half per
cent. the old issues are likely to go lower
in case the resolution to pay our debt In
gold woald pass.

The Crude 'market was 'exceedingly
quiet to-day, not a sicgle sale reported,.
and prices have undergone no quotable
change. Spot oil sold on Wednesday at
17% to 18c,land it is seported there was
an offer to sell to-day at the inside quota
tion. Next six months, sellers :option,
is held at 17%c, and all the year, same

The Refined market also . continues ex
ceedingly quiet though firm, and this
seems to bathe character oradvices both
from the east and Europe.• There was
some inquiry for February today, but,
no sellers-36%c offered; and February
and March together would doubtless
command the same figure. Later
months quiet and unchanged.
