—The New York Chamber of Com
merce have for several weeks past been
disaussing the subject of specie resump
tion. The.object of the' discussion was,
as expressed by Mr. A. A. Low, to "fix
upon some reoommendatibn to Congress
to show that the merchants of New York
had some.detinite d ideas as
to ths great financiali ssues s of the day."
Among the members there is however, a
great diversity of opinion 04 the subject
of contraction of the currency. There
are advocates of allgrades of contraction,
from $10,000,600 per annum to $50,000,000
per annum; while others are unquali
fiedly opposed to any contraction.
Many think'that:the public debt should
be paid in coin, lind that Congress should
commit the country to that at once. On
the question legalizing coin contracts the
Chamber *as unanintons. ~
