The Express says the situation among
the Ei.press Companies seems invested
with a peculiar interest, in view of the
• continued rise In stocks, which have
been stricken from call of two boards,
and this in the face of large watering. The
reports that the Adams Company intend
to sell stook, variously stated at $3,000,
000 to $3,600,009, are without the slight
est foundation, in fact.' The Adams and
United States have partially arranged
their settlement with, the American and
Merchants Union, by which they are to
recover routes surrendered to the Mer
. chants Union when the late combination
was made. The Adams gave up on this
arrangement twenty-six per cent.
and ' the United States sixteen per
cent. of their routes anti amount
in stock and cash, which tile Adams is
to par to the reeeiver. Their old lines
comprise but a very small portion of
;3,600,000, the amount reported. The
United States of course would have - to
pay even a smaller sum than the Adams.
The recept purchases of the Adams are
understood to be on account of stock to
be delivered to the American and
Merchants Union in part payment. Some
brokers have consulted with the Presi
dents of the. Adams and United States
Companies and both of those gentlemen
express their entire willingness to have
their transfer, books removed to a re
sponsible trust company, but are com
pelled to await the authorization of their
'- Boards of Directors at the next regular
monthly meeting.

RIVER NEWS.
The river continues to recede steadily
at this point with alai feet in the chan
nel by the Mononstsihela marks last
evening. The weathef has turned soft
again, end last evening a drizzling rain
was _falling, but we should not be sur
prised to see it turn cold just as sud
denly, as the wind appeared to be veer
ing Around to the west.
We have no arrival, to record aside
from the regular packets. The Arma
dillo, front Louisville, and Lorena. from
st. Louis, are bath due.
The Camelia departed. for Nashville
last evening with a good trip, havinsr
all the freight she could carry. It is
but proper to state that a considerable
proportion of her freight was for Cincin

points,
George, steamer Mollie Ebert, Capt.
W. Ebert, will pentitively take
her departure for New Oilalas to-day,
and passengers and
_shippers should
bear this in mind. The Mollie is a tip

no better steamboatmen that Captain
Wash Ebert, and Standish Pepparci, the
cashier.
The Rate Pntnam, Capt. G. W. Reed.
