JAMES T. BRADY & CO.
T, AT 11 A , N.
ctr gittsbltl'o Gkfttt.
OFFICE OF Pwrstioitias GAZETTE,
FELIDAT, January' 29, 1868. S
Gold is rather sluggish, the market
steady, with but slight fluctuations, and
no decided teddendh the fact, however,
that despite the shipments to Europe
the market does not advance, shows that
neither speculators nor importers have
any confidence in higher prices. Dur
ing next week shipments of coin will
probably be dispensed with, as the sup
ply of cotton bills 'will be ample to
meet the demand for present' obliga
tions in Europe. The general opinion
favors lower prices for gold duringthe
early part of March, but concedes a slight
advance between this and that period,
as, however, speculation on gold is dor-
Mant, the probability is that 'the fluc
tuations-will be bat very light. ,
In Government bonds we .haVe to re
port a dull but firm market. • The re
cent advance and probable reaction as
likely to take place, mentioned to-day
week, induces parties to realize in order
to be' ready when it is safe to buy for
a rise; for those who - operate in Gov
ernments experience (has taught them
quick operations had realizations often
repeated pay best, however small the
margins may be.
Stocks are dull today but firm in all
the Erie cliqUe stooks; the friends of
Erie neglect , that stock and throw their
whole force on the connecting roads
with the Pacific roads. If they succeed
to get control of these roads their
shares .in Erie will appreciate without
making any effort for the present. Ex
press- shares are firm and higher, with
a lively speculative demand in anything
belonging to the cheapgess of securi
ties. Money easier at S id' 10 per cent.,
but business is exceedingly dull.

PETROLEUM MARKET
°MOM OP Prnsuriiiis 6AZETTIh
FRIDAN, January 29, 1869.
The oil 'market corthines in that un
settled 'and sensitive condition which
has been the leading(eliaracteriatia all
the "week, and operators generally are
coinplebely at sea. There is a fair
volume of business, however, and pricesf
are pretty well' sustained, but there is
a feeling of uneasiness and a want of
confidence apparent, notwithstanding.-
There are those who ins!st strongly
thatAltere must lie a reaction, rand that,
too; before 'long; that it is impossible
to keep the market in its present in-
Bated condition, and that its own weight,
without any outside influence, will be
suffident to breaklit down. There are
otheral who argue just as strongly the
other way, claiming that the idvanceis
natural' and legitimate, the demand be=
ing in excess of the supply, and that
tinless there is a largely increased pro
duction, high prices will, and must, or.
necessity, • prevail. This diversity of
feeling and conflict of views tends very
Much to unsettle the market, and, of
cdurse, retards business. There are
capitalists outside of tbe trade who, if
it were not for the doubt and confusion
which prevails, would buy pretty freely
on speculation; as it stands now they
are timid and hesitate about taking
hold at present prices. If prices would
drop back to where they `were sixty
days ;ago, there. would be a very strong
speculative demand, and there are
many', holding back with this object in
view.'
