WHDifESDAY, January 27, /869,
The beat) . party made an • attempt\t'e
day on gold; bonds and stocks, and pai:;-•
tially succeeded in making money
scarcer and put up the-' rates on call
loans, butit is doubtful whether they
possess more power than temporary
checking the advance.
_, The bull de;
meat is too rich to be backen at a single
stroke, and other events have :to bear
on the market before stocks or bonds
will yield; as for gold, apinions are very
much divided, it is considered high at.
present, but in any event can, not go
much below 135, whilst the chances are
in favor of a slow hut steady unprofita
ble investment for the speculators, and
merely giving simple interest to the
full owners of the gold. The steady in
crease of our imports and falling off of
of exports in a ratio from three to one
per cent. will. prevent any material de
,dine, whilst pea* in Europe would
'lead to an advance in the rate of in
terest in the commercial centres, and a
consequent withdrawal of funds now
held temporarily at New York. War
in Eur . ope would, on the other hand,
increase the demand for 'American
bolds; cotton, flour, wheat, shipping
material, tobacco, Ltd, to an extent that
would fully offset our large imports.
The question is daily - raised, who is 'it
tlikt, says business is so dull, and yet
our importations of luxuries, but
more the necessaries, as iron, steel
and glass are on the increase. We have
,but one answer to give, and believe it
to. be correct: So long as the tendency
of gold is upward, importers and trad
ers in foreign goods will always find a
profit to sell their goods; a single sea
son with a downward tendency for gold,
and the warehinises of importers will
be - so filled • up' that importation will
dwindle down to'n mere nothing.
Bonds are less firm at noon, but, olosed
strong and higher, with a large specula
' live demand.
Stocks are very feverish, but at the
close the tendency was stilt tending up
! ward.

CRUDE
The Crude market is quiet .but, firm,
and while the demand does not seem
to 'be urgent, the, offerings continue
light. We can report sales 2,000 bbls
(40 to 45) next six months, seller's op.
tion, at 17c, and 2,000 bbls, all the year,
buyer's option, at 20c. There may have
been other sales, but these were all that
we could hear of, and with the exception
of a little stronger feeling, there is no
material change to note, compared with
yesterday.
REFLNE D.
The Refined market was also de
cidedly stronger, but as has been the
case all week, the volume of business
continues light. We can report 500 bbls
for January .at 3530, which is an ad
vance of half a cent compared with ' yes
terday. There was also a sale of 500
bbla for the las half of July, seller's
option, at 37 1 4 c. February was quoted
at 35;0 for first,,and 32c for last. We
can repoTt cable ' telegrams asking “re

The Hog Market, under 'the influence
of iSontinufxl light arrivals , and a steady
deMand, IS exceedingly fltin, and, if
anything, prices are even higher than at
the date of our last report. New York
Hogs, of which there are bat few in mar

'prime' to extra' Philadelphia Hogs at
1l to 12c. It is but proper to remark,
however, that there were but very few
sold at the outside quotation; and not
withstanding shippers have come up to
the scratch thus far all winter at tie big

pric they , are now ebtrimehaillg to

been touched, and that if there is any
change, it must - , of necessity, be a de
clirie. It is admitted the 'Hog crop is a
light one, but there is a limit in the price
of Hogs as well as in everything else;
that limit has been reached, (so it is
said) and lower prices are predicted
