very much as they have Leer for some
time past, dull and devoid of anything
that is really new or important. The de
mand for: all of the leading commodities,

The . railway market during the fore
noon was generally weak, though excep
tionally Rock Island, Wabash and Indi
ana Central were strong and hi •her; old
southern, Erie, 'Harlem and Ohio and
Mississippi were active. The firmness in
Rook Islam' was occasioned by intima
tions that the company would make a
distribution of the scrip representing
the largest amount ofdand owned. and
estimated at ten or twelve millions. Hud
son advanced 4 per cent. and Harlem was
firm in the afternoon. The entire mar
ket was buoyant and active at • higher
rates. Businegi is well distributed
throughout the list, and at the' close the'
feeling was unsettled, but the advance
was well maintained. Miscellaneous
shares higher. Pacific Mail buoyant on
the report that the Company had earned
8 per cent.-the last quarter and of stock
dividend from shares now held by the
company. Extiress shares higher.

RIVER NEWS.

The , river is falling slowly with but
four feet in the i channel. The weather
moderated considerably yesterday, and
at four r. x. tho mercury was up to 40
and rising. The wind seemed to be
changing around . to the east, and the in
dications were favorable for either rain
or snow.
We have no arrivals to report aside
from the regulir packets. The R. C.
Gray from New Orleans, is among the
first boats due.
The Champion, left for. Cincinnati last
evening, with a4fair trip.
Capt. W. M. ist, has temporarily as
sumed command of the R. B. Hudson,
Capt. Russell having concluded to re
main at home for a short time. The
Hudson, as will be seen by card, will be
the first boat ou , for Cincinnati, and pas
sengers and shippers should bear this in
mind.
Captain Darragh has been obliged to
defer the departure of the Bellevernon
for a day or twe, but it should be borne`
in mind that she will be the first boat
out for St'. Lords.
The Camelia, Japt. Thos. Poe, will be
the first boat out for Nashville.
The new steamer Mollie Ebbert, Capt.
G. W. Ebbert, is announced to leave for
New Orleans on Saturday.
The following boats were in port last
evening: R. R. Hudson, Rate Putnam,
Glendale, Camelia, Wild Duck, Mollie
Ebbert and Bellevernon.
Captain vronii Rea's new mountain
steamer, it is e.Tpected, will be ready to
leave here about the 20th of next month.
