Railway shares active and buoyant,
with a general advance. The specula
tive interest largely centered in New
York 'Central, Harlem ' Reading, Ohio
and Mississippi, Waba sh, Toledo, and
Rock Island, and those stooks show
greatest vitality and buoyancy. The
market fell off during the afternoon, and
New York Central which touched 165%
during the day, fell about 1 per cont.,
while Rook Island, Northwestern, Old
Southern and Ohio and Mississippi each
lost apart of the advance. The market at
the close was strong, though unsettled.
The state of MllOOl/11001115 shares, Pa
cific Mall being the principal feature,
sold as high as 121% and as low as 1203 f.
Canton rose to 61%. Express shares are

the same day, en route for this port;
The decision of the local inspectors in
regard to the collision between the tow
boat Tiger and J. N. MCQullough, has
been published. ' The license of Carlton
C. Cable, pilot on the McCullough, was
revoked, and Win. Stewart, pilot on the
Tiger, suspended for 60 days.
—The Minneola, of the Cincinnati and
Memphis packets, has discarded the use
Of carbon oil, and substituted lard oil.
—Lawrence Roddy, of Pennsylvania,
19 years old, second engineer of the
Glide, died on Sunday, at the Charity
Hospital, in New Orleans, from the ef
fects-of the injuries received by the ex
plosion of that boat.
—A St. Louis dispatch says: Repre
sentatives of the - Northern Line, North
western Union and Keokuk Lines have
been in consultation here for two days
past with a view of fixing a basis of
agreement for the transaction of business
between here and St. Paul next season.
The prospects are that there will be no
opposition between these companies,
and
that rates will be established which will
avert the ruinous competition of last
'Year. The party taking the initiative in
this matter has not transpired.
