change and the scarcity of cotton and
other commercial bills has led to heavy ]
shipments of gold, speculators availed]
themselves' of 'this' opportunity to ad-]
vane the premium from 135% to 134(,]
with a strong market. The probability]
is that a rapid rise in gold will be bun
gurated by the foreign houses, as well
as the exchange dealers and - stock ope
rators' who find thiil working in their
hands. The great ease in the money
market will give operators all the facili:
ties-of carrying large amounts of gold
at a low rate whieh'will be still reduced
by the scarcity ,of gold on the market;
even the Government can do , but little
In the way of sales, since the market
steadily advanced: under heavy dis
bursements, and' is not likely to decline
much, even at the entire sales of the
custom receipts.
Government bonds have been barely
steady, under a light speculative and in
