Gold, which looked strong yesterday
without any apparent excitement at 136 S
to 136 M, settled down to-day at 136!(, with a
dull market. There Is neither cause for
any advance in gold nor any desire to have
it sell above present price, as it would ma
terially interfere with the value not - only of
exports, and imports, but also of our do
mestic business arrangements. Our for-,
eign bankers are making efforts to keep
down quotations for the sake of selling
ex
change which is now coming on the mar
ket in larger amounts from cotton ship
pers. It would create an uneasy feeling in
Europe, in regard to our bonds. The finan
cial journals of Frankfort, Berlin and Paris
speak highly of the introduction of a resol
ution in Congress denouncing all attempts
to pay our bonds otherwis.han in gold as
dishonest, and express a belief that in the
event of a Eupopean war, our bonds would
be eagerly brightened up.
Bonds are dull to-day, and one fourth
per cent. lower from this mornings prices.

—The Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad
'having passed from the hands of the direc
rectors that had placed the road upon a
firm basis, by themeglect of its stockhold
ers, has now passed into the courts, and
promises to become as notorious as Erie
has been in the past. On Wednesday, an
injunction was placed upon the Road at
Cleveland, and Reuben E. Smith appoint
ed Receiver, on , xnnplaisit of the President, '
J. N. McCullough. The extraordinary
action of the directors calling for this action
is set forth in the following address to the
stockholders of the company by a minority
of the Board of Directors :
Whatever may be the result - of these
legal proceedings it is well understood
upon the street that the road is to be
manipulated “Erie fashion," and numbers
of investment holders have sold their
stocks. This new scandal could have been
saved had the owners of stock taken care
to have seen into whose hands their jurox
ies passed, and they have no one to blame
but themselves. It is much to the discredit
of railway - property, however, that - . ny
party can go into Wall Street, and purchase
the control of a corporation for a few thou
sand dollars, and elect a direction that de
liberately., sets to work to upset the value of
property in which they have no pecuniary

of proxies. The abuse of the system will
probably cause all voting, except by ballet;

The market is reported steady with , a
fair volume of business, in the aggregate.
though we have but comparatively few
sales reported. Some of the largest com
mission touses, it Is Raid, have sold pretty
heavily this week, both for present and
future delivery, but we cannot give de
tails, as the houses, above referred to, re
fuse to make fa report of their sales. The
following is all that we could pick up:

Trade in general merchandise continues

APPLES—In fair demand, and steady
with regular sales at 133,50 to $5,50 por bbl,
as to quality. .
BUTTER—Continnei dull, and neglected
but unchanged, 35 to 38, for good to prime
Roll.
BUCKWHEAT FLOUR—DuII at 4 cts.
CRANBERRIES—S2O to 3.42 per bbl.
BEANS—S3,SO to $3,75 per bushel.
CORNMEAL—SI to $l,lO per bush.
CHEESE—Dernand is reported a little
better; sales Hamburg at 16 to Fr; and
Goshen at 19 (to 20c.
CARBON OIL—Is firm and still tending
uiloward; we now quote standard white, in
a jobbing way, at 28 to 28X,
DRIED FRUlT—There is good local
demand for Peaches at 12 to 13 for quarters,
and 16 to 17 for halves. Apples, 10 to 11c.
DRESSED HOGS—Sales at 13 to 14c.
EGGS—Very dull; may be quoted at 25
for pickeled, and 30c for fresh packed.
HOMINY—SaIes. at $6,25 to $6,50.
HAY—There is no improvement in the
demand•for baled, and the market is dull
and prices unchanged, $lB to, $24 for com
mon to prime.
PROVISIONS—Bacon iS firm with job
bing sales 15 for Shoulders, and 19 to 19;6 for
Hauls. Country Lard. 18 to 19 and, prime
City at2o. Mess Pork, $30,50 to $3l.
LARD OIL—Is held firm at $1,35 for
No. 2, and $1,65 for No. 1.
SEEDS—SmaII sales of _Cloverseed at
$9, and,Timothy at $3,25. Flaxseed, $2,35
to $2,40.
SALT—Is steady but unchanged at $2
by the car load, and 10 to 15 cts higherfor
small lots in store.
GRAlN—Winter Wheat is still quoted
at ; $l,BO to $1,85, but the demand
is very light, and market dull. Oats in
limited supply and firm but unchanged
-64 to 65c on track, and 67 to 63c for small
lots in store. Sales of. Rye at $1,45, at
which figure it is wanted; but above that,
there are no buyers at present. Corn may
be quoted at 80c, In ear, 82 to 83c for
Shelled. Sale 200 bushels prime Ohio
Spring Barley at $2; No. 2 Chicago dull at
$1,85:
POTATOES—DuII but unchanged; 'sales
by the car load at 73 to 75c, and in store at
SO to 85c.
POULTRY—SaIes of Dressed Chickens
at 12 to 1234 c, and Turkeys, at 16 to 17c.
MILL FEED—The following are the
Pearl Mlll iirices: Brad, $1,10; Shipstuffs,
$1,30; Middlings, $2, Screenings, $l, and
Rye Shorts, $2.
FLOUR—DuII and unchanged. We
quote Spring Wheat, $7,60 to $B,OO,
and Winter Wheat, $8,75 to 89,25 per bar.
rel. Rye Flour, $7,76 to $B. The Pearl Mill
quote their bes: brands, made of the best
Wheat; as follows: Extra Family Flour,
in barrels, at $9,50, and, in sacks, $9,20 per
barrel; Double Extra Family, in barrels,
$10,20, , and, in sacks, $9,90 per barrel;
Spring Wheat Flour, in barrels, $B,OO, and,
in sacks, t 7,70 per barrel. The City Mills
quote prices as follows: Extra Family,
(Winter) in barrels, $9,50, and, in sacks,
$9,20 per barrel; Double Extra Family, in
barrels, $lO,OO, and, in sacks, $9,70 per bar

The oil market was rather quiet to-day,
especially in rt( fined, and while there is,
as yet, no material change in prices, there
was more . of a disposition to sell than for
some days previous, though no disposition
to make concessions in order to effect
sales. One of the effects of the recent ad
vance in the price of oil is to stimulate
development, and the number of new
wells going down is said to be unusually
large, for the season. We hear it stated
that the Columbia Oil Company at its last
annual meeting, the other day, passed a
resolution to expend fifty thousand dollars
in developing new territory, and, we pre
sume, that what is true of this is equally
applicable to other companies. Nor is this
to be wondered at, as with oil selling at
$6,25 to kt 6,35 at Oil City, new territory will
doubtless be developed, and a redoubled
effort made toward patting down new
wells.
The market for Refined was uriusully
quiet to-day, and with more sellers than
buyers, the feeling seemed to be a little
offish, especially for early deliveries,
though as yet, there is no material •decline
in prices. January which sold yesterday
at 34, was reported as having been offered
to-day at 3334 to 333 a. January to' June
remains unchanged having been sold at l 3s,
and 35 was bid for March.
There vraS a fair volume of business in
Crude to-day, but like Refined, the market
was not as firm and bouyant as it was yes
terday, and in some instances, sales were' '
made at a slight reduction. As a 'general •
thing, however, there is no important
change, compared with 'yesterday, . here,
while' at Oil City the market was reported _
firmer. The sales were; 2000 bbls January
to Jane, seller, at 15;4; 3,500 same delivery
and option, at 15; 1,000 same delivery and
option at 1534; 1,000 all year seller, 14;4:
2,500 June to August at 17; 2,500 September
to November at 17; 500 bbls .Venango City,
$6,25; 1,000 011 City; 18,35; and t2OO paid for,
the privlege of placing 1,000 bbls first six •
months at 14%.
