•
The+ gold market remained steady tc
day at 135%@13.534, . and closing at 1353(,
dill. The increased.demand for sight ex
change on Europe has led parties to larger
shipments of specie, and a•consequent In
crease in the demand for cash gold. Ship,'
meats are now continued at the rate of
seven hundred thousand dollars per week,
which would soon relieve the market of
all`the surplus gold, and reduce the bal
ance in ilia banks to about' seventeen
millions befOre tbe Treasury will pay out
any further interest. Speculation in gold
is very tame, and, although few will be
lieve in lower prices for some time to
I come, the probabilities is that not much
above the present, rate will be paid until
the end of February or just before the
opening of navigation.
Government bonds were dull to-day, and
declined another 34 per cent. for the new
issues. Money will command a better in
terest elsewhere than in government
bonds at high prices bought at near par,
they are cheap, but at 9' per: cent. above
par will scarcely yield more than .7 per
cent.
1
'ROUSE.
Stocks are dull, lower and on the. eve
of a heavy decline for want of boniflde In
vestors; nearly all the stocks now carried
in Wall street, are held by spectdators, and
the nearer we approach the usnal Febuary
money stringency, the more these specula.
'tors get frightened at any heavy decline.
Express shares are better.
'Money easier. BUilness ituictive. _

there seems to be an titter aversion to sel
ling, especially to what is termed wiling
short. .And it may not be out of pines to
state that it is the "short sellers" who
beim been buying the great proportion of
the, oil thathas , been. sold.for some weeks
past. and, consequently. they , contributed
much toward swelling prices, andliiinging,
about the excitement, which I*i prevailed
for'some time.:` This being the case, those•
who are."long" feel Very cemfortable, and,
'as's general Ahlng, there IX no disposition
xr.arafeatied gu, vat of holders to sell, as
00A,8T.,
y atteaded
they feel that , by holding off they w be
able to realize still higher prices.
