FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFIOB or Tim Prrrantrunit GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, January 9, 186 9 .
Gold, which looked strong in the morn
ing at 135%, declined to 135 1 4 ;. the market,
although with a firm undertone, has
nothitig, to indicate any rise, the more so
since it requires but little encouragement
from Congress in the shape of legalizing
contracts, or an act to absolutely making
our bonds payable in gold, or creating a
contingent fund in gold to redeem a cer
tain percentage of the first issues of bonds;
to advance the' price of all American se
curities in Europe so much that all ship- -
meuts of coin to Europe are out of the
question, and the gold premium will read
ily decline from 5 to 10 per cent.
The completion of the Pacific Railroads
will 'also aid in the - cheap prodUction of
the precious metals from the Rock moun
tain regions, together with the encourage
ment which the cultivation of cotton has
met the past year, and our foreign inoagin
ary balances will soon be in our favor in
stead of against us.
Government bonds, have, still !cattier
advanced by the absorbtion for invest
ment and the advanced quotations in Eu
rope. The price has; :however, no rapidly
advanced that a counteraction may be fol
lowed before.tbe nilddle of the nuinth..
Railroad shares are less firm, except
Rock Island and North Western; Erie,
Ohio & Mississippi, New York Central,
Cleveland and other shares are all lower.
The easy motley market may tempoarily
have the, effect of advancing prices, bat a
heavy decline must soon follow, and the
present easy money market is only a pre
cursor of a heavy fall, in prices on the stock
exchange. The , watering process has so
far turned out very . well for those who
held stocks, but the owners wish to realize,
as it is impossible to earn large dividends
on capital stock that has been trebled
within the last few years, whilst the-busi
ness of the country has been diminished.
Express shares are dull.
Local securities more in demand. Bust

SAT T URDAY, January 9, 1869. •
The general markets have been dull dur
ing the past week, and there is but little
prospect at present of any immediate im..
mediate improvement. Flour and some
kinds of. Grain were a little firmer during
the early part of the week, in sympathy
with Chicago, but there was no improve
ment in the demand, and no , advance in
prices. The general impression is that'these
commoditles are not likely to go any,
higher; and those who have bought-with`'
that expectation, will most' likely be disar.
pointed. Everything emanating from the
Hog product is firm and higher. In other .
articles there has been no important,
changes.
