FINANCE AND TRADE.
OHITIOR OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
FRIDAy, January 8, 1888.
Gold was dull and lower to-day at 135,
with a limited business; speculation in gold
is i rather tame, since. the ;fltiettiatiems; are
so small and the expense of _havihg gold
carried so large that it is unprofitable to
buy long or sell short, and so it is left
alone.
Government bonds were firm • but
steady; the demand, is increasing, and es
pecially legs aro scarce,, and .18658 are • ne
glected. !The cheapeSt security on the
market is' now the• Five Twenties of 1861,
which sell about at the same price as 18675,
and carry one month gold interest. Union
Pacific Railroads, which were sold up to
January at 102, are now tempOrarily re
duced to 100,.at which price the demand
has increased. In Central Pacific bonds
little is doing since they yieldcd no more
interest than the others cost more origi
ginally, and offer Lo greaier security than
the Union Pacific.
Railroad stocks closed better and firmer
today. Pacific Mail, New York Central,
Erie, Ohio S. Mississippi and Cleveland are
all better and high-er. There is' a general
increased demand for all kinds of securities
that are dividend paying,
Express shares are, less fine, and Mer
chants Unicia has touched 13 tio-dily on • a
nominal stile. -ir seems as ( if the end of
the Express generals was not reached yet.
The entire system has to undergo a pro
cess of puriticrion; these expensive mo
nopolies have had their receipts consider
ably curtailed by the fast freight lines,
the better Railroad.
• cionnections to the :ex--
tretne west, ancr eapeelally the money'
order system, by which a large income
sisl:ierived with but little cost and risk,
whilst, sine, the government bonds were
issued, the.:rialait and' losses have, Jargelj.
increased.
Money less stringent, but business very
dull •

notwithstanding the fact that much of it
isiould hate , to be sold, at a heavy loss,
having been't9Ught at an average of 81,60
to $1,60 per bushel. But motley is easier.
'now, and thigralb Will'not be COdiffloult
to carrV, there,be a reasonable hope
'of making anything, by it in the spring,
This is the; klaritty, irobletta which our,
,wocuct operators have peen trying for some
tithe "Peat to' solve. If it be true, as re
pently alleged, that much of the large .
English crop was so roor in quality that it
was fed to stock in the abscende of foots
ear •herbage, then there la room - to hope
fur higher prices; but, if this be a canard,
'(arid it is laughed at as such by many who
ought be well informed) then there is
little' prospect for higher • higher prices,
aid the longest holders will probably prove
to 14 the great losers. It is certain that
our wheat market has been for 'utonths
past in an abnormal conlition n .rnore.uuder
the control of the speculative element than
ever, before. - , .

feeling of doubt and uncertainty in regard
to 'the future, which coupled with a strin
gency in money matters, tends to restrict
trade, and squelch out anything like a
speculative feeling.

for a reaction have not thus far been real
