The new tunnel lir Chicago; under the river -connecting, the *nal': Division with the river will be thrown open tolhe public on 'Friday, tfie let of January:` The first stone Was litid Anguet 17th, 1867. The following particulars we glean from the Chicago Post : • Under the bed of the river and over the - tunnel the roof is of stone. Along the sides of the causeway is found the same material, while the bottom is paved with brick, sanded . The length of the work is about 1,605 feet, from the centre of Franklin street to the centre of Clinton street. The length of ,the retaining walls of the open approach on the west side is about 320 feet, and 275 feet on the east side., The length of the main archway, or covered way, is 932 feet. There are three;archways leading through ;the tunnel for the accommodation of the ;public. One is for foot passengers, and two for teams and horses. The grade taand'out from the tunnel is a little greater than what it now is at some of the bridges, heing about 14 to 320. Obser vation has demonstrated that about one out of ten of the teams that pass over the bridge .at this pent is heavily loaded, and inch as this grade might be difficult- for it to over come. To the other nine, and to the count less number:of foot passengers going here, the present grade is nothing: The remedy to the others will be' lightening, their loads. - The tunnel •is ventilated by meats of apeitrires and openings at "intervals, and is lighted by las, the' gas lights being about threerfeet apart in the various causeways. : The gas will .be> required both night and day, ago continuous darkness is here, un visited even by sun, moon or stars.
