SATURDAY'. December 28;1868. '
,
The main feature of the pist week was ,
, the tightness of the money market , thead
-1 Vance of the stock market and the firm
tone in the gold room. Although it , has
Icost 1-32 and even 1-18 per cent. per
.day to.
. have gold cairied, yet the market ad
! vanced under l a light demand, and at the
eve of large payments of interest for bonds
Iby the Government and - the Pacitio Rail
,l roads. The unsettled condition of Euro
pean politics, as , well as the large ship
ments of currency to the cotton . States,
'were the main causes of these unexpected
changes' in the market.. A careful exami-.
nation of the reasons assigned for: a futuie
rise of tEe gold premium reduces them to
the tear that large shipments of gold
would have to be made, whilst our im
portware known to be small for the Season
and have fallen off coneiderably already;
the stagnation in all, kind of 'foreign busi
ness, especially dry goods, is very dis
couraging to largeimportations, and the
exports of cotton will keep pace with im
port:s of other merchandiae. An advance
of the gold premium for political causes
would have the effect of 'bringing down
the cries of our national bends, and thus
prevent large return shipments , of them in ,
exchange for 'gold; the only reasons for at y
advance in gold would have t 4 be looked
for at horde, and here there is none, since
i tt is not likely that Congress will yet med
dle with the currency question, otherwise
thaji seek a decrease of our currency
issues.
Bonds were dull during the week, but
rallied oa Saturday for the issues of 1865,
'O7 and '6B, the interest of which becomes
due Ja.nnary next; there is also more de
mand for Pacific, bonds for the purpose of
earning the accrued gold interest; yet, in
view of tae tight money market larger'
purchases may be delayed until after the
quarterly 'bank statement 'on January
fourth.
Stocks retaain strong, .and nearly all the
Railroad shares are higher on - aceount of
the management of the large cliques; the
transactions at the stock exchange, how

SHEEP. -
The sheep market was very dull and
offish during the early part of the week
under the influence of large receipts but
has since, owing to diminished arrivals,
improved considerably, and to-day there
was a every fair demand, especially for
prime fat mutton sheep, of whicli there
were but very few to be bad. Prime to ex
tra may be quoted at 4,50 to 5 ces per
pound, and Common to medium at 3 to 3,50.
The soles during Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday and up untill 10 A. X. to-day aggre-
gated 6,050 head nearly all of -which
changed hands at prices, ranging from 3 to'
4,75,—0n0 drove scalawags, .sold at $1,05 per
head. As we have hivealready intimated
the market was stronger, than it was ,in the -
early: part of the week,. though there is
still room for iinproYement.
13=21
There was iittle'or nothing done in Hogs
yesterday or to-day, which was owing
mainly to-the fact that there were but - rery.'
few in tlieyards , to sell, - the arrivals during`
the time mentioned, not exceeding half a
dozen cars. This being the citse;the-rair-Li
ket continues firm, and since the date of
our last report, prices have advanced fully
50c per cwt. We can report sales durjng
the east three days of 4,17 end, and we
give quotations 10-day at 9RN for fair to
medium averages, (such as are usually
shipped to 'New York) and 10 to 1034 for
prime to choic,e, Bach as are usually shipped.-

out of the; market over . a week, and; we,
presume; 'that they' will stay' out until ' '
prices decline materially. At present
prices it would require a fortune to put up
5,000 Hogs, and, besides, it is risky ? as they
may be considerably lower before , the sea
son is over. '
