he received a second shock in perceivrng

all orderly and 'well-regulated smoke does,;

,
For it slowly shaped itself until its misty
outlines became distinct, and he . could see
in them well-defined forms: mountains with
rocky cliffs thrown into fantasti,c shapes,
little'spots of vineyard intruding where they
could find reom, mountain streams finding
a way out of their rocky barricades, a little
village at the foot of the mountains, each
feature seeming more familiar than the last,
until he' knew his, old home, a fac-simile
complete in. every detail. And then, before
his astonished the whole picture,
without changing in the least, slowly sailed
through the air and deliberately placed itself
upon the waif over his fire, as it waiting to
be framed. Mechanically, and from force of
habit, he had recourse to his old remedy in .
all cases of /perplexity, a puff at the Pipe.
With like /results as' to the expected
flavor of Canaster,- for again it was the
mouth on the Pipe, and not his own, which
emitted the blue cloud. Once more he
watched, but this time with expectant inter

a little ring in the centre, which waited
until the rest bad flattened down ton smooth k

THE GAME OF SNAPORICION.
arom the Book of Dayi.]
One favorite Christmas sport very gener,
orally played on Christmas Eve, his been
handed down to us frgin , time immemeriali
under the name of -tSnap Dragon.' To our
English readers this amusement is perftetlY
familiar, but it is almost unknown in Scot
land, and , It seems therefore.' desirable to
here - give a description of the pastime..; A
quantity of raisins are depoilted in a large
dish or 'a bpwl . (the broader and Shallower
it is, the better) and brandy or some, other
spirit is poured over the fruit and ignited.
The bystanders now endeavor by turns" to
grasp a raisin, by plunging their halide
through the tames fund fla this is somewhat of
an arduous feat; requiring both towage and
rapidity of action„ n. considerable amount of
laughter, and merriment is _evoked at the
expense of the unsuccessful competitors.
As an appropriate accompaniment we intro

Whilst the sport of snapdiagon is going
on, it is usual to extinguish all the lights in
the room so that the - lurid glare from the
flaming spirits may exercise. to the full its
wierd-like effect. There seems little doubt
that in this amusement we retain a trace^ of
the fiery ordeal of the middle ages, and also
of the Druidical fire-worship of a still:re
moter epoch: A curious refereice to it oc
curs in the quaint old play of Lingua,
quoted by. Hr. fiandys in his work on Christ
illas :
"Ifemory. Oh, I remember this dish well;
it was first:mvented by Pluto 'to entertain
Proserpina withal.
• Pha 7 nectsta. I think not so, Memory; for
when Herculea had killed the flaming drag
on of Hesperld; with the apple of that
orchard he made this fiery meat;` in memo
ry whereof he named it snapdragon." '
Snapdragon, to personify him, has a poor
relative or country cousin who bears the
name of 17apdragan„ This is a favorite
amusement among the common people in
the western counties of England, and con
sists in placing a lighted candle in a can of:
ale or cider,: and drinking up the - contents of
the vessel:, This act entails, of course, don
siderable rfsk of having the face singed, and
herein lies the essence of the 'sport, which
may , be averred to be a-somewhat more ar
duous proceeding in these days -of mouti
teems and long whiskers than it was in -the'
time of our close shaved grandfathers. •
IT appears that Gustave Dore and Chris
tina Nilsson wcre not. betrothed after all.
Dore proposed to the Swedish cantatrice
and was rejected.. He urged his suit, how
ever, so persistently, that M'lle Nilsson told
him she would think of the proposition for
six. Months and then give him a definite an=
swer. When the time expired, she informed
him that she could not marry him. Dore,
however, is said, not to be at all discouraged,
but feels convinced that she will relent in
course of time.
