Gold, which had closed firm on Friday
evening at 135 y„ advan , :ed at the close of
Saturday - evening to 135%, after having
touched 135.. The fear that we will have
to ship bullion to cover balances in Eu
rope and that the complications that may,
arise out of the eastern question makes
importers more eager to cover themselves.
The great mass of the importers held back
their remittances in anticipation of a lower
premium on gold, and especially for low
rates of sixty-day cotton bills, but- since
the premium will not yield, although we
are within two weeks of a period when
thirty-two millions of gold will be dis
bursed by the Government, and produce
and cotton should go forward in larger
amounts. For the latter there is but one
reason to account for the slow movement
in our export articles, and this is to be
fonud la the fact that planters are no longer
dependent on .the fasters, but are able to
hold their produce until better prices may
be obtained. -
Government bonds were dull and lower,
with a light bnsiness. Everybody fears a
tight money market in January next, - and
do not care for carrying anything that is
subject to a depressionin value or cost,dear
enough to .save over a period of -stfin.

York 'Central, which is manipulated by a
strong clique who had cheap money bor
rowed some time ago on favorable terms.

The future the provision ma d rkes a
subject of great interest; it'is' also on which
there is no agreement of :opinion. That
prices are inflated is scarcely to be doubted.
The provision market has,been invaded by
outside speculators, who have bought and
sold enormous quantities of pork and lard
for future delivery, and 'thus forced up
prices by the competition —especially
within the past few days, when there was a
rushto cover shorts on the part of those
who saw packing proceeding too slowly to
suit their requirements. Then the packers
went in to compete for hogs wherewith to
meet the demand, and this forced up togs
to a price which is enormous in view of the
crop. There is no more profit in packing
now than when pork was $4 per barrel
lower, but it may well be doubted if there
is not great loss ahead for some one. , Un
less it shall prove that all calculations with
regard to the character of the hog ) . crop,
were failures, it is impossible that present
prices can continue through the season,.
and if there should be a heavy decline, it
will tell heavily against those who will
have to receive at present rates. But the
gerieral feeling to-day seemed to bo in fa
vor of continuous high prices, 'and the de,
sire to invest seemed greater than ever. Is
the pork market cornered? It, is more'
than probable, and, if so, it is the most gi
gantic corner ever known on 'Change.

HOGS.
The; market for Hogs has been quite ac
tive during the past week, and prices ruled
firm, With an upward tendency.. To-day,
with light arrivals, a limited supply and a
good demand for shipment, the market
was somewhat excited, and an attempt was
made, to force an advance of a quarter on
prime heavy averages. Some few lots of
Tait,' kind were held at 9V„ but 'so far as
we could learn, there were none sold above
9c and hot many at that. We give ii4to 9
as the !range for common New York to
prime Philadelphia Hogs. Messrs. Holmes,
Lafferty & Co. sold some 1,600 head to-day
withinl the above quotations. None' of our
packers have been buying for several days
in consequence of the exceedingly high

during the past week the sales in the,ag
gregate being large, and prices hare been
unusually uniform throughout the entire
week, cents on spot or seller's option
all next year. Buyers option, all next
year, is still quoted at 10; Sale to-day of
3,000 bbls, first six:months, seller's option,
at 123.
REFINED...•
The Refined market was also quiet to
day, and devoid of any new or important
features, worthy of special notice. Spot oil
was quoted at 31 to 3134,—n0t a single sale
for that delivery reported. Sale 500 bbls
first six months buyers option, at 3334;1,000
each April, May and June at 3234—consid
ered half a cent above the market; also a
"call" of 3,000 for January, February, and
March 1,000 each, at 2834 and a dollar.
