FINANCE AND TRADE,
OPIUM OP THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, December 17, 1888. S
The money mniket is tightening, in con
sequence of which, gold declined to-day
from 135%, 134%@134%, with a weak mar
ket. Cash gold is quite plenty, and sto 6
per cent. is paid for carrying it; the feeling
at the decline, however, is very firm, and
as soon as this stringency passes over a
sharp advance is looked for, from the fact
that the market has been heavily oversold
within the last three days. Exchange is
steady but less firm; the demand is light,
and the offerings will most likely exceed
the demand.
Government bonds are . very weak and
dull, and have declined from % to % per
cent., with no disposition to operate for a
rise at present. Everybody feels the ne
cessity of keeping close to shore over the
next January interest, and does not care
for being burdened down now, when then
there may be as much in bonds in a single .
day as there is for , two months to cOme.
Stocks, although lower on some of the
Western roads, ore firm and higher on
New York Central, Erie and North West
ern, whilst the balance of the list is steady.'
Express shares are firm, but Mining shares
are very dull.
Money tightening more and more, and
business very dull.

This grade of . stock, inconsequence of.
diminished arrivals, is considerab firmer,
and prime fat Sheep'maytbe quoted at 25 to

are comparatively light,•which - is owing to
the fact that the number on sale was small
—if the, number bad been larger, the sales
would also have been larger. Prices
ranged all the way from, 3% to 5% cts per
pound, for common to extra—there was
-but one drove sold at the outside quotation.
The great proportion of, the sales, were

OFFICE OF THE PITTBITROS GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, December 17, 1868.
The most important feattme in connec
.
tion wfth the oil business to-day is in=
creased shipments, and it is likely that
they will be larger to morrow add next day.
We understan4 that the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company sent some two hundred
cars up the Valley Road during yesterday
and to-dav, with a view of accommodat
ing refiners who are anxious to have their
oil in West Philadelphia oft', or before Alon
day next, in response to the "calls" made
on them some days since. Oil that ,is
shipped to day or to-morrow, or possibly,
on Saturday, can be delivered there on
time, so that if there are any "shorts," the
Railroad Company will not be to blame.
The officers of the Company have done all
that has been asked or could be expected,
snd we know that our refiners fael kindly
towards the Central for the prompt , and
efficient service rendered in getting their
oil forward on time.
CRUDE.
The market is, quiet and unchanged,
with but comparatively little doing. There
were offers to sell the first six months of
1869, seller's option, (40 to 46) at 1235; and
offers to buy same delivery and option, but
a different gravity (40 to 45) at 1234. Sale
of a "put" of 1,000 bbls first mne months,
sellers option, at 12 and two hundred dol
lars; also,
option'a of 2,000 bbls. same de
livery and at 12 and four hundred
dollars. Spot oil, for which there seems
to
be but little inquiry, is held at 1 nd
buyers option, all next year, at 16.
REFINED. - •
•
Tne most remarkable feature we have to
notice, is the fact that while Antwerp came ,
in a. franc higher this evening, the
. Re fined market closed weak and lower—at
least, such was the case at 4p. Deliver
able ou the 21st sold at 31X to 3134 c during
the early part of the day, while, towards
evening, the samel delivery was offered at
31c. We can report sales of 1,000 barrels' at
31%c; 1,000 do at 3110; 1,000 each April to
July, inclusive, at 3234 c, and 600 each Jan
nary to March , ' inclusive, at 30.35 c. The
first six months, buyer's option, was of
fered .at 33%c, and, it is' thought; could
have been bought at 33c.
