The most important , feature we have to
notice in regard to our markets, in a 'gen

and Grain. The firmness which prevailed
a week since, has pretty well subsided, and
hbiders are more anxious to realize, having
become pretty 'wellsitiatpid that prices are
not likely , to gap much higher, and .that
there is a • possi bility; if not a probability,
of a decline. Stocks are' large, demand re
stricled almost entirely to supplying inime&
diate wants, money seared slid collection

The river was about'' on a stand last eve
ning with four feet three inches in the
chexMel by the Monongahela marks. The
weather was soft and, mild during the
greater part of the(lay, but towards eve
ning it became" col4er, the wind having
shifted around to to west, and we should
not be surprised fo see another l'freeke"
set in. • I
No arrivals or departures to report aside
from Monongahela River packets.
The New York, may depart tor Evans
ville today, providing the weather does not
-turn cold, and the same is true of some
other boats.
The Grey Eagle, Capt. C. L. Bennan, is
announced to leave for Parkersburg to mor
row.
The Mary Davage will be the first out
for New Orleans and she will be followed'
by the Armenia , A.: C. McCalr.
The Camelia, Capt. Poe, will bet e first
boat out for Nashvllle.
The Bayard may , get off for Cincinnati on
Tuesday next.
We see it stated -that Captain John B.
.Davis contemplates building a packet here
for the Memphis and White river trade.
—A gentloman lately up I the Arkansas,
writes: "Arkansas River Valley! will pro
duce 80,000 bales of cotton this year.. The
.people.,will generally ;get out of debt and
have some money left, enough to make the
next crop." •
We hear that the Grand Lake, with a
large tow,of coal- for New . Orleans, stuck
her entire tow at Tradewater, in the Lower
Ohio, but finally succeeded in getting six
of her barges off ail right. The rumor that
the Boaz sunk , part of her tow needs con
firmation.
—The Cincinnati Commercial, of Wednes
day, says: Captain R. C. Grey passed
through the city yesterday, en route from
St. Louis to Pittsburgh. Captain Hugh
Campbell and Captain John L. Rhodes
also passed through the city, en routefrom
Pittsburgh to Lotusyille.
—Capt. A.. Williams, formerly of Cairo,
but lately of St. Louis, an old, commander
on the river, died on Sunday, the 6th inst.,
on, board the steamer Mollie Able, while
near Bayou Sara. He was a relative of W.
M. Williams, of Vicksburg. Capt. Wil
liams was a native of Virginia: He leaves
a wife and two children. His remains (in
compliance with his dying request) will be
carried to CoYington, Kentucky, and laid
to rest by the2grave of his mother.
-- , The Evansville Journal, of Saturday,
says: Capt. Billy Phillips, of the Louisi
ana, slipped from the stage of Brown de
Co.'s wharfboat, yesterday morning, into
the river, and got oonsiderably wet. The
Weather was so intensely cold, that by the
time he got to the Louisiana, he was
speechless, and his clothes were as stiff as
a board. By. proper appliances he was
soon all right but be thinks the weather is
not pronitiotta for cold baths.
—A St. Louis telegram under date of
Tuesday says: There was thirty-nine libels
against the Great Republic, just released,
for mariners' wages, supplies, ite. Of this
number, twenty-nine were dismissed by
the owners paying the claims. For the
balance of the claims Henry Yager and
Thomas Morrison became securities. The
amount of claims for which proceedings
were instituted. was 540,000. The original
cost of the Great Republic was 5280,000, and
she has sunk an amount nearly equal to
