OFFICE OP THE PITTSBURGH GA_Zt./.3.E.,
TUESDAY, December 15, 186 S.
Money being easier, in New York, the
borid, , 4;stock and gold markets were all
firtner and higher to-day. Gold had
touched 135 A and advanced to 135%, with
a very firm feeling under large purchases
since the recent decline. CashhgOld is
quite plenty, but the shipments to Europe ,
and the South average over a million dol
lars per week, which takes all the surplus
gold, or the amount on the market out of
the hands of speculators, and reduces the
Amount •avalfable for speculation to what
banks-choose to let out liefore January
next'. Although there is no cause for a
rise of gold at present, yet'the feeling in
regard to !European pOlicies Prevents spec-
ulatiaus for a decline, and keeps the prec- 1
ious metals now hoarded - out of I the
market.
Government' bonds seem to have touched
bottom for ,the present, and although they
did not iPuterially advance to-day; lees
bonds are cslfered for sale. which keeps the
supply on the market close up to the de
mand. More inquiry is made for old 1862
bends at the present low rates, more for
the purpose of speculating in them than for
neimahent investment.
The stock market is higher and firm; in
Erie, New York Central, Cleveland, Fort
Wayne and Ohio 4.4: Mississippi; there is
also an- improvement in all the western
stocks, which are more bouyant, since the
apparent stringency has passed over. The
stringeney was artificial, caused by ,the
attempt of thelnanagers of the Now York
roads for •the 'purpose of getting posses
sion; of as-much stuelt- , ,of_the Cleveland
road'as possible. Tho consolidation of the
Pennsylvania Central and Fort Wayne
railvads have put the New York roads to
the necessity of finding new direct connec
tions with the far west, which they, hope
to accomplish through the Atlantic &
Groat Eastern and the Cleveland roads with
Ohio connections.
Money remains quiet, but in good de
mand. Businessflull.

—The Chicago Tribune, of Monday, rei
ports money matters in that city, as fol
lows: Tho business of the week closing to
day has been a considerable improvement
on that of the week previous,..and though
money has been tight, and the last day or
two tho stringency has shown a tendency
tb increase, the business prospect is a vast
improvement on that of a month or two
_ago. Th stock of grain and flour in store
hero now is in the aggregate less than half
' w h a ;, was at olio time during the fall, and.
capital 'held in them
the whole ar:.! ° " t of
is probably not a irL i lisin and a half of dol-
Jars, which would be 0n. 1 ,7 about one-third
of what was so held a short alue ago. The
packing business has, however, absorbed
all the surplus capital released by the tie
crease of these products, and is the item&
diate cause of the stringency in money just
at present. This, however, is expected to
workgts own cure in a short timo, as mer
chants aro beginning to find :Imo little im
provement -in making collections in the
country as one of its results already. For
tunately ler all business interests In thi.9
part of. the.-" Country, there was an active
eastern'. dereand for 'provisions from the.. l
very beginning of the peeking semen,
which has caused earlier shipments than
usual, and has returned much of the capi
tal to be used again:' but for this. money
would havhbeen much tighter now. Even
as it is, a good many of the, wholeaale mer
chants are compelled to ask for renewals
of paper falling due, though there are not
so many instances of this kind as a month
ago. Upon the whole though the money
market is 'tighter, budness is in a much
healthier condition than b few weeks since.

The general markets although steady
with a fair, local demand for most o: the
leadinearticles are nevertheless quiet, and
the volume of business in the azgregate

not likely to go much higher. Flour is
quiet but steady with a fair' consumptive
demand and prices are well sustained.
The receipts appear to be increasingslight
ly, and stocks of all kinds of produce are
accumulating, though the demand. gener,
