FINANCE AND TRADE ,
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MONDAY, December 14; 1868.
The gold market remained firm to day at
135%; the lowest point reached was 135;‘,
and the highest 135%. The demand for
cash gold Is 7 ery light from the fact that
the government will pay out in January
next about! thirty-two million dollars
which with the ,present coin in the bank at
New York, will likely swell the amount
there to over thirty millions which would
far ,. exceed the gold held - by, old state
banks; their average being twenty-three
millions, t and but one had reached thirty
four millions. This, together with the in
creased shipments of cotton from now to
March next, will keep the market well
supplied of either exchange or gold, should.
there be any need for shipment to cover
present importations. In support of ,a
lower premium on gold It is argued that
the governmen t would anticipate the Jan
uary interest in case an attempt would be
made to unduly advance the Memium by
speculative schemes: It Is the desire of
everybody, and particUlarly the govern
ment that, whatever the price of gold may
be the fluctuations be as light as possible.
Government bonds are dull and lower
to-day, not so Much for want of money im
mediately, but it is feared that there will
bean unusual pressure for money on for
aboutlie first oTJanuary, when those who
wish tospeculate may buy cheap, and
dealers in bonds are ‘ not willing to carry
large stacks.
Railroad shares were firmer to-day, on'
an easier money markbut it seems to be
only a temporary stay in the downward
course of prices. Fort Wayne; Erie, Cleve
land and Ohio Mississippi are m all firm,-
whilst Western shares are lower. F.l2.ress
shares are firmly held during the pressure,
for money at the end of the week; it is_evi
dent that these stocks are cheap at present
prices, and, at that, ought to yield a hand
some return sooner or later.
In our local' money market, the demand
for money is increasing, and the state of the
market is reflected at the sales of local se
curities, which . It is difficult to sell, except
at • concessltlts. Allegheny Valley, bonds
'vere Such in demand a few days Ago at
84 to 85;ibut could not be sold over 823 i, and
a rounil lot might not . bring that, when
offered. Business seems' to improve in a
small way.

ALLEGHENY CATTLE MARKET.
OFFICEOFTHEPITTSBUROIT GAZETTE, r 1
MONDAY, Decemberd4, 106 S. i
CATTLE.
There was a full supply of attle on sale
to-day, - about 1050 head ut with goo l d
weather and afair, ,deMatid, the market
was more active t n last week, and, >if
anything, prices especially for prime fat
Cattle, ruled/shade higher. The number
of eastern buyers was not very large, 'Mt
the butchers took hold with more liberality,
and there Was an increased number of
/
country buyers in attendance. As regards
quality, there appeared to be a very fair
proportion of good Cattle, and, as a matter
of course, this grade always sells with less
trouble and at relatively better prices than
the commoner kinda, though when we left
the yards (at 10 a. m.) the indications were
that there would be very few of any kind
left uns6ld. Prime to extra butchersstock
may be quoted at 7 to 734: good to medium
at 6 to 634, and common at 534. Stock
Cattle range all the way from 4•to 514, ac
cording to _quality and condition.

SHEEP AND LAMES. r
The supply of sheep was again COUIData•
tively small this week,. scarcely:Teachbyg
two thousand head, and as a consequence
the market was firmer and prices higher.
Prime to extra fat Sheep sold at from 0,75
to $4;50 per head, and some lots were held
at 5 cents per pound. Even "scalawags"
were held at an advance and the. scalawag
butchers, were growling bitterly—some
intimating that another market or so like
this one would smash "Butler." There
was one eastern buyer in attendance, but
be did not buy, the butchers paying more
for prime Sheep than he was willing to
- give, while scalawags he did not want.

There is a continued steady retail de
mand for Hogs, and it would be much
larger still, if It was not for the exceeding
ly high prices. We quote in a retail way

though they were but few sold above 9 cts.

PITTSBURGH PETROLEGMARARICHT:
OFFICE .OF TEE PITTS:OTROS GAZETTE,
MozinAy, December 14, 1868.
It would appear, from information en
tirely reliable and trustworthy, that the
recent calls were made, not for the purpose
of bringing about a "corner," but because
the parties who called wanted the oil for
shipment. There is no attempt made ttb
disguise the fact that there is a combina
tion, and a powerful one it is, who, have
bought a very large amount of oil, and are
still buying, and their reasons for so doing,
they claim, are ( very good ones., Accord-.
ing to statistics, (deemed to them at least
perfectly reliable) the consumption is now
and is likely to continue continue consider-
ably ahead of the production, and acting on
this presumption, this combination expects'
oil to be higher in 1869 - than it was in 1863.
While it is possible that the basis on which
the above calculations are made is correct,
it isi-nevertheless, a disputed point, and
one which time alone will -demonstrate. It
Must be confessed, however, that the calls -
, made last week looked, to say the least;
' suspicious, coming, as they did, simul
taneously, from so manY different quar
ters.
The market was not quite so activelo
day, sales being comparatively light, while
so far as prices are concerned there, is no
impOrtant change. Twelve and a. half
ents still seems to be the standard price
for-spot, all December, or all 1869, sellers
option. Buyers option, all 1869, is nominal
at 15%-tol6. Sale of 3,500 bbls first eight
months of 1869, (40 to 45) sellers option, ,at,
12, 1 c2,000 sellers option, all 1869, at 12;4;
and , lo,ooo do same delivery, option and
price. `-•.
REFINED.
The Refined market was again quiet to
day, little or nothing done, and no impor
tant change in prices. Offers to'sell deliv
ered cat, 21st at 31%; and the last'half of
December was quoted•at 30 to 3034. Janu
ary to June, is nominal at 31;4, and it was
rumored that there was a "lige" sold from,
A.pril to July, 1,000 each month, at 32%.
—Since the above was put in type, we are
cognizant of offers to sell spot oil at 30, and,
deliverable on the 21st, at 31. -
