RIVER NEWS.
The river continues to recede steadily at
this point, with eight feet in the channel
by the Monongahela marks last ,evening.
Had it not been for the sudden change in
the.weather, there would doubtless have
been ten feet last evening, instead of eight.
Business was more active at the
landing yesterday. the offerings of freight
being more liberal, and had it not have
been for the' icy condition of the levee,
rendering teaming a little hazardous, it
would, no doubt, have been still better.
The arrivals since the date of our last
report, include the New York, from Cin
cinnati, and the Armenia and Maggie Hays,
from St. Louis.
The Glendale was dropped to the point
yesterday afternoon to take on about one
hundred • tons of railroad , iron for St:
Louis.
The Grey Eagle, Capt. C. L. Brennan, is
the regular packet for Parkersburg to-day,
leaving punctually at noon.
There was considerable floating ice in
the Allegheny yesterday, but it was thin
and of no consequence, so far as navigation
is concerned. If the weather, however,
does not moderate, and that, too, before
long, the ice will soon become formidable,
and navigation restricted, if not suspended.
The Bayard, departed for Cincinnati,
with a fair trip also, the Ingomar for Par
kersburg, and the Julia No. 2 for Zanes
ville.
The Tom Farrow and Barges, arrived at
Cincinnati on Sunday, with about 800 tons
of freight. •
The Mary Davage and Barges, Capt.
Shedden, are filling up steadily for New
Orleans, and will be the first boat out. "
The Camelia, Capt. Thos. Poe, will be the
first out'for Nashville.
Milton Woods, kone of the pllota of the
towboat Lake Erie,.No. 3, was among the
illfated America's passengers. He jumped
overboard and swam ashore. Capt. Wm.
Campbell, of the tow-boat Mary Alice, was
also on the America. He jumped over
board with Woods and swam ashore. He
lost his watch, leaving it under his pillow.
—Mr. B. E, Burch, formerly a well
known New Orleans pilot, has returned to
the river atter an absence of several years.
—The Fit: Charles has gone into the pack
et trade between Cincinnati and Louisville,
which was rendered necessary by the re
cent disaster.
—lnducements are offered Capt. Stut
Neal to place the Richmond in .tbe mail
line between Louisville and Cincinnati, in
place of the America. •
—Capt. J. F. Luker has sold his one-fifth
interest in the Vicksburg packet Lumin
ary, to J. Lee Finney, who has in turn sold
it to Capt. J. N. Bofinger • Capt. Luker rill
continue in command for the trip, after
which he will transfer to captain Bob.
Riley.
—The Dubuque hes at Fulton City, and
the Canada, Reserve and Bill Henderson
are on the ways at Le Claire. The Charlie
Cheever is at Rockingham, and the Reiths
burg at Montrose. AU the rest of the
Northern Line boats, twelve in number,
are at St. Louis, except the Pembina and
New Boston. The fifty-two barges of the
line are scattered along in different ports
from St. Paul to St. LOUIS.
—The work of raising the J.
.N. McCul
lough is progressing favorably, according
to the latest advices we have. The rising
river swung her on the chains attached to
the Hats on each side of her, and raised her
off the bottom of the river, so that she
swung around with her bead almost dirolct
ly down the river. On Wednesday night
the swells ofone of the mail boats caused
several of the chains- to part, which has de
layed the work somewhat.

Perfectly peactical method of propelling
vessels by •steam, whereby a saving of
seventy-five per cont. of the power can be
effected. The mechanical constructionist
said to be perfectly simple, consisting in a
pair of steam'oars, so arranged that only
theparts corresponding to the' impinging
surfaces of the blade come in contract with
the water, the other sides never touching
the water, It is asserted that a canal boat
of 200 tuns can bo propelled two ,miles an

steam, and larger boats with a speed vary

employed.
