OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE;
Fnana.y. December 4, 1868.
On the report that;the Seeretariof the
Treasury is opposed to any forced resump

gold advanced to 1306, but the market
settled down to 18.1y,'. We may now enjoy
the privilege of paying our debts in legal
tenders and see our depreciated currency
put up or 4:town to suit the reckless
gamblers of Wall street, furnish the rest
of the world with cheap gold and buy the
toys and luxuries of Europe _ at high prices: .
It seems the Secretary tuts at last recog-

specie payments as' the ,best and safest,
avoiding violent fluctuations, and enables
us to pay our debts tie we grow mere:pros_

• The bond market 18 dull, and. although
quotations are maintained, yet any de
cline in geld Would also have a tendency
to depress tkmds; aided by the apProach
of the annual settlements. which' require a
large amount of money. The advance in,
London on the rate of interest from 235 to
3 per cent. will have a tendency to re
strict dealings there, and we may, should
gold decline he below 130, see return
shipments of bonds, - especially the old
issues.
Stooks are rather unsettled; Erie de•

so on down. Merchantillnion Express de

Company of five per cent. additional in

a dividend. The Express management is
about as.foal as that of the Erie road-the
only difference iii in tlienmotini of money
involved; but here it touches a class of
