OFFICE OP THE }ITV:METEOR GAZETTE,
ThunsnaY,-Deeember 3 1 1868.
The gold market remained firm to-day
at 135. The dealers in gOhl and brokers in
general are puzzled about these high rates,
and are afraid to make any engagements
ahead, except at higher quotations' al
though they are unanimous in their opin
ion that lower rates will prevail prior to
January first. As a general rule this lull
would indicate a sudden advance, but
neither commercial reasons nor the politi
cal condition would warrant any rise. The
amount of exchange by shippers of cotton
offeaed on the market is large and will have
a tendency to lower sight exchange to a
point that specie could be`shipped profita
bly if so desired.
Bonds are not very strong, although quo-
tations are nominally higher to-day. The
demand ftir bonds is limited, and outside of
the dealers who wish to replenish their
stock, no dis Position exists to engage large
ly in bond operations, as is usual at the
close of the year. The old 5-20 s, 1862, have
slightly advanced and are quoted to-day X
percent. better than yesterday.
Stocks are decidedly neglected, and no
disposition to operate outside the clique
stocks, and Fort( Wayne, Cleveland and
New York Central is manifested.
The express shares are dull, and Mer
chants UniOnbas declined to 16 to-day, on
the supposition that an assessment of five
dollars is to be made on the shares; this
stook being widely distributed among the
Smaller class of retail dealers , such a pay
ment is hard to bear by many who have
held their stock in anticipation that it
would soon rise to par. PA set of gamblers
who held considerable stock at 18 to 22
managed to advance the price to 44 by the
washing process generally resorted , to,
when there is a corner in any kind of se
curities fictitious purchases and sales are'
made among the cliques, prices range
above the ordinary market rate, and if any
stockholders not 'belonging to the/ague
wish to sell they Cannot find a purchaser,
except among those not initiated. TheSe
managers advised all they confidential
friends in New York/ who had ex
tended connections over the -west that
the Merchants Union Express was the
cheapest stock on the list. The New York
markets and everY man interesed in cheap
freight purchajed until the -market had
touched 44,4c0m which it rapididly de
elined to 30424, and now 16.
Business dull, and money easier.

—We clip the following from the Chicago
Tribune, of Wednesday, in reference to the
recent ' , corner" in corn: The late corner
is understood to be still unsettled to a
largo extent, many of the shorts refusing
to pay the enormous differences demanded,
preferring to let the case go before the
board, where; under . the recent , action,
there is little chance of the contracts be
ing enforced, It Is estimated that about
one-third of the shorts: have "seitled," the
other two remaining in statu qUo. and not
feeling pgrticularly uneasy. It is to bo
hoped that this will be the end of corners
in our Boaad of Trade. There is little
temptation to run them 'if the Board re
fuses to arbitrate in favor of the combina
tion.

There isms one drove of extra Sheep on
sale averaging about 115 pounds, but at last
accounts it had not been sold. This drove,
we understand was held at 6.
HOGS.
The market was considerably. excited
and - firm to-day, under the influence of ad-
vices from both east and west reporting an
advance, and prices were put up from 15 to
20c per cwt. The demand is mainly for
shipment thus, far, but one of our packing
houses having Imght to any extent, and
unless prices decline considerably, we are
of the opinion that the number of Hogs
packed here will be very small. Messrs.
E. H. Myers & I Co. bought some eight car
loads of good packing Brigs to-day at an
average of about 7,50. Hogs, averaging 250
to 300 lbs, for Philadelphia markets, sold
as high as $8.25 per - cart. Prime New York
Hogs, weighing from 200 to 250, may be
quoted at $7,35 to $7,60 per cwt., and small
weights of from 150 to 200, at from $7 to -
$7,25.. The sales since our report of Friday
evening last'foot up 10,848 head,_at a range
of from $7,,t0 $8,25. One lot of 95 head sold
as high as $8;50. The sales reported on
Friday last were 7,230- head, at a general
range for good to choice at $7 to $8,25. To
talsales for the -week 18,078 head, against',
20;358 head reported last week. There
were very few remaining unsold at the
close to-day.
PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, December 3, 1868.
The market was exceedingly quiet to
day, the volume of business being unusia- .
ally light, and nothing new or important
transpired worthy of special notice. Com
pared with the close of the market yester
day, the feeling seemed to be a little weak
er, and this afternoon there were offers to
sell Refined for December at a slight reduc
tion. At no time, perhaps, within the past
sixty daps has the market been so tranquil
as during the past two or three days, there
being no excitement whatever; and prices
have been Comparatively steady.. In our
article yesterday in regard to the empty
tankage, there was a serious error, which
we here take occasion to correct. We said
that the empty tankage is reported at two
million: gallons whereas it should have
read two millions barrelit, making quite a
difference.
CRUDE.
The market is dull and neglected,
though prif..es are unchanged. Sale of 1,000
bbls, spot, At 113ic; and 3,000 bbls, seller's
option, January to March, at 11c. The ar
rivals of oil have been remarkably light
for some time past, not exceeding 500 bar
rels per day. ° This is owing to the fact that
oil is relatively-higher in the oil regions
than it is here, and cannot be delivered
here with any profit to the shipper. It is
asserted that Cleveland is buying freely,
and this accounts for the fact that oil is
relatively higher in the oil regions that it
is here.
REFINED
As already intimated, was dull, and a
little weak to-day, and, if anything, prices
are a shade lower. We can • report two lots
of 1,000 each for the last half of December
at 294 c. Subsequently, spot oil was re
ported as having bead sold at 29c, and all
December, by New York sellers, wAs' i offer
ing at same figure.
