The general markets continue very
quiet, the long-lboked forimprovement has
not shovin itself is yet. It is true, there
is a slightly_ improved local demand for
some articles, but this is exceptional, and
Will not apply in a general way. The de
mand for most of the leading commodities
is very much restricted, and We have but
l'ew round lot Operations to report.
APPLE BUTTER--Sales at 70 to 71 in
kegs, and 80 to 85! in crocks.
APPLES—The 'demand continues brisk,
and while.the market is firm, prices are
unchanged; ranging froms3 to $4 per bbl,
as to quality.
- BUTLER—Is in steady demand, and we
can report regular sales at 35 to 40, for good
to choice Roll. I
BEANS—SaIes at 03,50 to 0,75 per'
bushel. .
BUCKWHEAT FLOUR—Sales at 43ic.
CIDER—DuII; $6 to $9 per bbl.
.CRANBERRIES—SaIes of fair to choice
:Eastern Cultivated_at $2O to $25 per bbl.
CHEESE—DuII; sales at 15 to 15' for
Western Reserve; 18 for Ohio Goshen, and
20 for New York. do.
CHESTNUTS-46 to $6,50 per bushel.
• DRIED FRIJIT—The demand is rather
better—prices unchanged. Peaches 12 for
, quarters, and 14 to 15 for halves. Apples
9to 11c, as to quality. '
EGGS—Limed quoted at 30 to 32, and
fresh.packed at 34 to 35.
HOMlNY—Sales at 56,50 to the trade,
and $7 in a retail 'way.
HAY—Sales of Baled Hay on wharf at
418 to $23, for common to, prime Timothy.
, Continues very dull.
POTATQES—The demand is improving,
and the receipts falling off; we quote Peach
,Blows at 85 to 906 per bushel, for small lots
in store. '
STRAW—SaIes 5 loids -
CORN HUSKS—, Sales at 334 c.
GRAlN—Wheat is quiet and unchanged
at 51,75 to 51,80, for prime Red Winter.
Oats in rather better local demand; may be
quoted at 62 to 63c, on wharf aid track,
and 65 to 66c for 'small lots( in store. New
Cora Is in demand, with sales of prime at
- nse on track, and 80 to 85c, in store. Old
Corn is dull and neglected—but little in
market.. Rye is iin good demand at 51,40.
Barley is firmer and in- rather better de
mand, but correct quotations cannot be
given.
ONlONS—Continue very ' dull; small
sales at 51,25 to 51,50 . per ,busliel„ as to
LARD OIL—Is scarce and in steady de
mand, with regular sales of No. 1 Winter
strained at 51,47 to 51,50.

Stocks are quiet and strong. New York
Central has been • irregular, but closed
higher; a few hundred shares were bought
in under the rule. Toledo was strong an
der the report of four per cent. hilt yearly
dividend. Fort Wayne' and Rook Island,
which are next in interest to New York
Central, also advanced considerably.
The Stock Exchange has passed a resolu
tion not to call the American Merchants
Union Express until further notice. The
rise in New York Central caused tho sus
pension of a brokers' firm on the bear side.

—The first steamboats entered the Mis
souri in 1819, two belonging to the John
sons of Kentucky, with Government,
freight at eight dollars per 100 pounds to
the Bluffs, both of which failed to reach
the Bluffs.
—lt appears that the bid on the steamer
Great Republic, which the Court is about
to confirm, ' was only $25,000. Mr. Powell,
liquor merchant, and George H. Rhea,
President of the Second National Bank, are
parties in the bid with Burhnger d: Simms.
—On Thursday night of last week, at
Petticoat Ripple, a tow-boat supposed to
be the Hyena, ran afoul of the Rover,
which had in tow an emigrant boat, sink
ing the latter almost immediately. No
lives were lost, but a portion of the stock
on board was drowned, and the goods con
siderbly damaged.
—There was an interesting time in St.
Paul, on the 24th. The occasion was an
Orphan Fair. The voting commenced that
night for the hondsemest, politest and most
popular Captain on the Mississippi, be
tween St. Paul and St. , Louis. At closing,

evening of the 28th, say: An offider of the
steamer Hiram Wood reached here last
night by rail, having left the boat gorged

diers, left the boat, and divided into two
partles, traveled on foot down to Fort Ran
dall, sabsisting on Wild game. From
there the camp by stage to Sioux City
