The record of the Society from veil. to

It will be seen by the Treasurer's report
that the Society is not in debt; and-in pros

Since the last annual meeting , the Society
has lost its venerable, much , loved, and for

Gen. Robinson, whose heart was truly, in
the good work. Her memory will be cher

for 'C ngress, I fell upon Gardiner, the in
vent° of the lamp•lighting apparatus,whieb,
as yo know, leaps like a flash. of I lightning
through the thousands', of gas jets from the
lantern of the dothe to the coal pit of the far
wings,' setting one, or 1 fifty, or a thousand
aflame, at eboiee. 1 -
Gardiner is a middle-aged man,, with
black beard and hair, rather invalid-lookini
and meagre of body. IHe occupies one of
the little old domes of 'the central Capitol,
where is his prodigioUs battery, -the acid
buckets, holding three gallons amece r made,
of glass, and there the ladies go to take
ishocks for nervous disorder or for amusc
ment..
This patentis one of the most valuable - m
existence. Theinventor has from twelve to"
aixteen years to run upon 11,'and he sits in
battery-room,- - awa&tbat fortune is as
sured. All the gas lighte;:cf:cittes will be
illuminated in this way; eventually.
"They've got to •cometo , it," says- Gard
ner,.quietly. "The officers of the 13t. Lotus
Gas Company were -here to see me a little
while' ago. .New York has already enter
ed into negotiations. London wille prob
ably the second to accept it."
, •What will it save New York to adopt
this System ?" ' -
"Well ! the city has a hundred and 7sev
_
enty.thousand dollars a year for matches,
lighters and inspectori. I can light the'
city for seven dollars a lam_p, or about six
hundred thousand dollars. Then the work
is done ; forever there will be no more re
,
paring. I calculate ' that the city will be
Tip with itself in 13Y9. Yearst cud Men for
twenty-tlve years the town will be . lighted
_for. nothing."
Gardner already lights filtewart'4o, new
store on Broadway, several hotels in.Bng-
I land and America, and the , Capitol: He
says that Washington is the worst lighted
city in America, and Philadelphia the best,
-the difference being 'accounted for by the
opposite quality of the gas.— Was ington

The Home" Tcurnal, which is good en:

cards will be, for this season, rather larger
than formerly,,and of the finest unglazed
Bristol board. The new sizes will tend
rather to the square_tban otherwise. The
shape of the card may be varied, according
to taste. Among the various texts in use,
nethinc will supercede the English script,
and those inimiteble styles of old English
text, the most novel • being those with
dropped capitals, and the extremely neat,
extra, shaded. Visiting cards, with the
familiar words denoting the object of the
call; will remain' in use,to some extent,
especially for calls' of oncratulation or
Condolence. The' word risai, on the left
hand upper corner, will be engraved on the.
reverse side: The corner containing the
desired word willibe turned down, so as to
denote the object of the call. The
word on , the right -hand coma. Aliei
tation, will be used , for visits of "con
gratulation on some happy event, as,
for instance, a montage, or a birth; on the
left lower corner, the word Conga, used for
a visit previous` to leaving town; the other
corner is to be marked Coitdolisnes. Cards
sent to friends' before leaving for a long
Putney, are issued.with the addition of P.
P. C., in theleft hand corner. These cards
ere inclosed in heavy and elegant, though
.lain envelopes, ornamented with a tasteful
monogram or initial. 7 In Wedding Invite
abhreviadons like eve, foi even
ing, will be l avoided, as well as p. m., - the
word afternoon being preferable. Invita
tions to berethonious weddings consist of a
'square note embellished with a large
monogram in relief, entwining the com
bined initials/Of the bride and groom. The
individual cards of both bride _and groom
must be also inclosed, united with a neat
satin tie; and; in solne cases, another card
with reception days \for :the following
month. A very neat style of card has the
customary "at home" on \ a note sheet, a
ceremony card (at fixed`otir), and the
united cards - of bride and- 'groom, all in
closed in a splendid large envelope,- of the
Tay finest texture with an elaborate mono
gram or ornament al initial. \
Tag latest New York. confidence garee is
thus detailed by a writer, who says he saw
on Broadway a man, appearing to be's
drunken sailor, walk up to alieggar woman
sitting on the curbstone and pretending to
be hlind, and deliberately kick 'her. Great
sympathy was aroused and the woman
made ti handsome collection from passers
by. She walked down a few blocks, where
precisely the same scene was re-enacted.
This performance was repeated two or
three timed, when the woman went to her
home in Water street, or rather to a beer
shop there, whither she was followed, and
found with three or, four more "blind beg
gars," with their . eight restored,s and all re
