Gold opened lower today, and touched
13434, but thB market remained firm at
from 443; to 134;•‘. The great ease in the
money market-6 o 7 per cent. on call--
enables partien to -carry . ' gold at a small
coat, and even get, a good interest at pres
ent; from the scarcity of the artiole r if the
Government had net coins to the relief of
the bear operators it
_is likely that gold
would have sold , to= day at 138 or more.
The bend market is strong and higher,
witba rising tendency for the next few
.days, and so long ai money remains easy,
the buying will Continue, but with the
samblaim of a, reverse in money matters,
large salmi \ may be expected; the ex
perience of the last two weeks not being
forgotteni by those ;who thought a ruie was
inevitable: - • •
Stocks are 'Strong, and after the Erie
corner is dissolved; it, is expected, that
,New York Central and Fort Wayne will
undergo' ' a similar' Process.' • The pro
gramme in Eris is, however, not yet fin
ished, and the clique have determined to
make another squeeze more severe than ,
before, since _they are in possession of
nearly all • the stock at a very low rite,
mostly bought at , from 136 to 139, and will
thua resist any attempt of a great decline.
Western shares, next to the clique stocks,
are quiet. Express shares are remarkably
firm, and a rise may be engineered in them
at any movement. . ' .
Business appears more brisk.
