FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAT.Lric LIN,
FRIDAY, November 13, 1868.
The money market opened with every
prospect of continued ease for the - next few
days, although rumers were afloat of the
locking ußof greenbacks, and in .conse
qitence there of holders of gold sold out,
preparing for—such a _ contingency 13234'
was reached at one time, but at the. close
the market became firmer, and closed at
133%. 'The opinion among - business
men is that gold wilrrange about 137 antil
the effect of the January interest, payments
are felt in the market, from whence a grad
ual rise Is expected toward the setting in of
the spring business.
Goverment securities were very dull to
day and opened at a decline .of one-half per
cent. The investment demand continues
to improve at present prices, but the large
dealers do not• seem to be buyers, neither
are speculatnrs; everybody seems to await
what is coming. •
Stocks' opened bonyant, but soon de
clined from one to one half per cent.; ad
vanced and closed weak and lower. Erie,
which was supposed to advance today on
last night's decline, opened strong, but de-
Clined >i per cent., and closed 1.% lower
than the opening quotations.
Express shares are firm.. Western Union
Telegraph stock • keeps firm at .55g. Fort
Wayne is weak and declining; also, Cleve
land ik Pittsburgh, New York Central and
Reading; the clique stocks • and Ottiodt
Mississippi are firm. •
Money continues easy, and business im-
proving.

were made to-day. The current rumors
were that money was to be kept easy for a
few days, until a more settled feeling ob
tains, when it will be suddenly made strin
gent. and a renewed attack' , made on the
market. This renewed stringency is to
be engineered so as to make ,Mr.
loch pay out his greeriback r s. The au
thority for him to do, so is doliht r e'd by all
sound financiers, and it is not thought that
he will issue a dollar of currency, all the
rumors to the contrary notwithstanding.
The- present •currency Is amply sufficient
for all the bnsiness interests. The real
fruit is in the enormous combinations made
to keep up the ,Prites-of produce; Instead
of. allowing It to decline to its level with
thecurrency. The premium on gold has
ranged from 32 to 50 per cent. during the
past year, while the products of the coun
try sell in some,: instances from - 100 to 200
per cent. higher than on a specie Oasis; the,
necessaries of life are thus controlled by
our superabundant currency to the- in
finite damages of the laboring classes. Any
process that cin be used to break these
prices to their legitimate level would be
• bailed by all• as a blessing. A return to
specie pay is the surest and quickest way
out of the trouble. Mr. McCulloch's want
of any policy has aggravated these evils to
a great extent, arid - the manner thathis de
partment has been manipulated to induce
a belief that he, would inflate the currency,
against law and public sentiment, excites
the indignation of the business community.

OITIPIONI OF THE PITTSBURGHOAZETTA
FRIDAY. Novemtrer,ls, 1868.
There is no improvement to note in com
mercial affairs in this; city at least, and
the hopes entertained some time since that
business" would improve after the Political
excitement had subsided, have not thus
far been realized. The feeling, generally,
is of a panicky character, which of .course
tends to paralize trade, and matters are
likely to continue so until money becomes
easier, and confidence, to some extent, at
least, restored. Ali banking institutions
are very careful as to whom they lend
ov money, andziarties who are suspected with
but very little chance of
being accommodated; nor is it to be won.'
dered at after the exoenence of, thlpast
few months. Failures all over the country.

The market. wasleobsiderably stronger
.
to-day, in sympatyi with Refined, but
prices are no higher, and this is accounted
for in the act that he former has been
relatively higher-than:tile latter for some
days past. We can 4eport 2,000 bbls to be
delivered on this water (40 to 45 gravity)
at 10c; .1,000 for N -timber at 10c; 1,000,
seller's option, firs , iix. months 1869, at
10c; and 3,ooo,ibuye ' t
s: option, all. 1869, at
.1
15c. Vie are cognisant of an offer to sell
LOOO per month (46 . 1 giavity) at 12c, with
out finding a buyer.i - - Thus, while the sales
in' the aggregate, 4, -day, were compara
tively light, theretao a stronger feeling,
and there is but little!doubt that had it not

been for the reacti n t oil would have sold
below 10c; it was r ored yesterday-that a
sale had been m de at 9Xc-it was re
ported on private ferms.
Ruktrzo.
,
As already intithited, the market was
t;ensiderablv atre t n a ter to-day, and with
6onsiderablii lug Y, especially for the
last half of Noverhber, prices, compared
with yesterday, arl from a quarter to half
a cent higher. We,cOn report two "lines"
of 500 bbls per month, for April, May, June
and July, making 4,000 bbls, at 30c; 500
bbls, on spot. at 26%c; sales- in-Philadel
phia of some thre4itousand barrePs, for the
last half of November, at 2636 c. At the
close, November, kuit half, was quoted at
263;e, with "refus.sdst' asked for at 27c. This
reaction was caused by the "short" interest
coming into the rn,itrket to cover their short
sales, and, at pr sent figures, they can
realize a very han some margin.
