LAWRENCE, Oct. 2, 1868.
Since my last I have been traveling round
in various directions, and find the same
things of - which I have hitherto spoken—
abundance of fine lands and of strangers
;:- traveling to and fro looking for locations.
Very many are content to take lots of eighty
-' -- acres, the half of quarter sections-80 by 160
perches. Some only take forty acres, wluch
is a square of eighty perches. Unimproved
lands range from say five to twenty dollars
per acre within the more thickly settled per
tons of the State; in the more remote re
gions they can be had at $1.25 to 3.00. Nen
who propose to go largely into 'stock raising
generally push out to the more remote sec
tions; but others who desire pleasant homes,
in reach of markets, schools, churches, mails
andmeighbors, pitch their tents according. ly. Men act wisely in taking no more land
tbln they are able to use profitably; for
money saved in this way: can be much more
advantageously -used in makings improve
ments, and in the purchase of gold agrictd
' tural Implements, fruit trees, Lt. \
I have observed a good deal of the effeets
of what is etdled "squatting." Men desti
tute alike of means, knowledge, enterprise
or industry, planted themselves ati an earlier
day upon quarter sections, reared shanties
unfit for human habitation- '
enclosed small
• patches which they cultivatedin a slovenly
manner, leaving perhaps one hundred and
forty of their one hundred and sixty acres
mere commons. Like dogs In the manger
they held what they could not use. But tax
. stion and other expenses are forcingall such
mon-progressive occupants to sell out, and
their places are being supplied by others
\ who can make the land contribute to the
~. general wealth \and prosperity of the State.
It is, however very true that many of these
xt.: original squatters did well. I know of one
F
man who took up a quarter section about
-'-' six miles from Lawrence, and in about ten
years has so itnproved it that he was offered
- and refused $85,000 for it. It is really worth
nit - e. He was quite poor when he began.
The other day while I was sitting in the
I office of a land agent two colored men came
Yin and paid $4OO for a quarter section.
Whet they finished their business and left,
. . ' the agent tolme that those were two of
.
eight colored en of family who ad omit
blued their little mean s in this way in order
t l a
to get and keeit , together, so that they could
' have a school f their own, and be a little
community among themselves. Each is to
have a lot of twenty acres—enough, if well
cultivated, to insure him a good li e N t i l g. The
. ' money was handed to the agent in eight sep
arate parcels rolled up in paper, parcel
containing fifty dollars. I admired the wis
dom of these nien, and thought if some poor
*lute men I wet of were to do likewise it
Would be well for them.
Kansas is not likely to become a State of
minister farms like Illinois, but the very ~p.'
• posite. This difference may perhaps arise
-.- from the very different physical conforma
tion of the two States. One is largely made
_ .., up of extensive plains, tempting men to
)'add acre to acre and sometimes section to
section in one hugs, continuous unbroken
plantation; the otter is undulating, diver
sified in surface, and but little of it suited to
the formation of oontineons farms each of
which may be measured by miles. Little
' farMa and many of them is the rule here. •
It Whetter. The first must ultimately lead,
.
in some degree, to a landed aristocracy, un
, favorable to social equality and the general
welfare, as hair long been 'the case hi the
43outhern States. In Kansas a social state ;
, the ver7 opposite is being inaugurated: A
: denser and m• re pmsperons population will
^-' be the result. , Land ought to be measured,
not so much , L• the acre, as by its produc
tive powe r; ~ d I hesitate-not to say that in
-, this
respect t . - • is, acre for acre, of
double the v 1 ue of Penneylvania. This
• being so, a Win here of eightyscres is as
adequate to the support of a family, and to
its thrift, as one of twice the number of
acreathere. ' •
It was a great mistake on the part of
. .:-Congress to give to each head'of a family,
tinder the Homestead law, a quarter section
of land. Half the quantity would have
been better for the poor men, who avail
themselves of its provisions, and far better
for the country, and for the cause of educa
tion and religion. They are too
_much
scattered to thrive either in their private or
' social interests. These railroad grants of
alternate sections have in a measure cor
rected this evil, for within'the range of these
grants homesteads of only eighty acres can
be acquired on the remaining alternate sec
tions; but they are preferred to the one hun
dred and sixty ifcre grants beyond those
/ranges, because settlers are anxfotis—and
wisely so—to get as , near to these roads as
1 'they can. All this proves the wisdom of
; these railroad ts, for wend that the
mai:Wain& seons are of more value,
'whether for sale or homesteads, than the
whole was without the roads. The sale
! _MriCe, as is well known, is doubled, the sales
are hastened, the country is settled and im
proved, and the savages driven back.
I think s glorious future awaits this State.
ilrobably not one of our new States has ever
bWn 'filled up with a population so moral
suid Intelligent. /Zany of them , it is true.
. are , .
t poor and strugeng, occupying small
[mud cheap dwellings, hardly fit for the pur
-1 pose. The other day while walking alone
- over the lonely. prairies I came to a poor
little house just erected. I met two little
girls at the gate whose conversation indica
ted good and refined manners. They invi
ted me to walk into the house. I did so, and
tfound the mother engaged at her needle,.
and a smaller child with a spelling book at
her knee. She = received me with the easy
courtesy of a well-bred lady, and I sat and
rested for some time in pleasant conver
sation. She was from Pennsylvania. There
was but one apartment in that house. This
is only one example of the kind among
,‘ many that have come under my observation.
I shall have more to say, for I,ain going

praise for
the are be
d ing so easily pleased.' I don't
think - y o much praise for
any thing else, but ese don't f
think they look
for it, and that in itself is a virtue. Gen.
Kilpatrick was in the Quaker City when I
was (which, if properly considered, is a
coincidence.) The old cavaliymen look on
him ,vvitb agood deal of pride, but they call
him Kill-kayalry, which name was a very
appropriate one some years ago, when he
did kill a good deal of the chivalric cavalry,
clad in gray, but now Kill-kopperheads
would suit him better. He is very popular
with the soldiers and the people, and ifs lit
tle speeches were very well received, and
a good reception is a good thing, as the Pitts
burgh delegation to Philadelphia can testify,
for they got an exullent one when they
went there, one which they won't be likely
to forget soon either,(either is a pretty good
sort of a word itsel f you don't pronounce
it eye-ther.) -
Independence Hall was a popular place
during the convention, as it was during the
other convention of 1776. The Democrats
have too much respect for, the. fitness of
things to.ever use this fine old half for their
purposes, although they do haie the imper
tinence sometimes to use the American flag;
but, as has been said previously, you must
be as little dissatisfied as possible with the
Democrats, although they do not possess
every Virtue. Like the baby that died, they
can't help it, and like the celebrated eel we
have got pretty well used to it.
When I came home from Philadel hia,
where I had seen a grand concourse of tens
of thousands of respectable citizens, was
not pleasantly surprised to see our old wn

Suppose when so many of the decent pnpu
lation went to Philadelphia, they tholight
it a good time to steal a march on Pittsburgh.
The first thing I saw on Liberty street was
a very disreputable thing inII the shape of a
Democrat, and as if that fact alone were
not degredation enough, he was a drunken
Democrat, which might be abbreviated to
D.D., if it were not for our respectable di
vines who, I have no doubt, would rather
be classed with dirty Devils than drunken
Democrats. I was stopped on_the
corner of Fifth and Smithfield by the proces
sion. I looked at it for an hour and was be
ginning to be astounded at the sameness
of the show, when a man in a wagon,
whose gay decorations looked very familiar,
shouted out to me, "Hullo, old feller, you
must be tired; I've passed you three times
now, and you're always in the same place;
if you're not gone by the next time I come
around, I'll bust your snoot." As I did not
wish to have my snoot .busted, I left and
went - over to see the row in Allegheny. I
have seen Donnybrook Fair, and the old
Richmond fitirs, too, but I never saw such
drunken brutality as I witnessed' in Alle
gheny. But, then, as has been mentioned,
ail the virtues must not be looked for in the
Democrats, who, though they get drunk,
swear, beat women, murder, barn, rape,
bluster, break into houses, and he tremen
dously, have still two virtues—they don't
expect people to think they are decent, and
they have invented a new system' of arith
metic, which has been adopted by the Post.
Don't think I am a Democrat because I
apologize this way for the Copperheads, for

Strange Freaks of Electric 7 in a Tin
Shop.
(From the Reno (Cal ) Create t. )
Last Saturday evening was verb eloudy,
and the sky surrounding Reno seemed com•
pletely suffused with electricity. The light.
ning blazed incessantly for two hours; and
nearly all the time the thunder came to us
in muffled moans, as it used to back in God's
country, when a summer shower had passed
by. Still only a few drops of rain fell in
Reno, and no one here thought the storm
was nearer than about five or eight miles
distant. But in Morris' _ tin.shop, of this
place, one of those strange phenomena took
place which happens at rare intervals ia
the. world. Morris noticed that a boy
in his establishment was handling the
tools very gingerly, and he asked him
why he did so. The boy said some
thing was the matter with tbem. i i . Morris
caught hold of an iron which the bov was
attempting to use, and let right go of it again.
He then seized the big scissors, used by tin
ners for cutting tin, and they retaliated by
sending him stumbling, stunned and almost
falling across the shop. Then, as if the evil
one had co menced a game of billiaids, lit..
tie balls o commenced hopping) about,
kissing of iron here and there, and mak
ing • d caroms on the coal furnace. Mor
ris spee ly took a hin; Concluded everything
meta ' " was charged with electricity, and
feeling uncertain when it might take a
charge on him, he did not stand on t order
of his going, but left the shop at once. Next
morning the evil spirit' had been exercised,
and since then the tin shop has been quiet.
