—The Louisville Courier of. Monday says
The tow-boat Lake Erie came= up over the
falls, yesterday, with a tow of empty
barges, and passed up for Pittsburgh. She
made the round trip from this port to Cairo
and back, taking down 15 loaded barges,
and bringing back 3 empty ones, in 5 days.
—The St. Paul Preis, of Friday, says: 'A
sharp snow storm visited this region on
Wednesday night, covering the pavements
and housetops. Further south it was much
more severe, covering the ground to the
depth of 2 inches. The cold spell from
which we are snaring extends quite gene
rally over the country.
—ln coining out of the Tennessee river,
last Friday, the Tacony struck the.pler of
the Louisville and Memphis bridge, across
the. Tennessee river, losing almost her en
tire starboard guard. The kitchen, pantry
and wheel-shaft were saved, but two
flanges. and apitman were broken. The
accident was; caused by the bridge.tender
being so slow in, opening the draw that the
steamer lost steerage way and drifted
against the pier.
—A St. Louis telegram under date of
Monday say= The Marine Charitable As
sociation,,coruposed of steambriatinen, held
a meeting to-day, and resolved to put their
society in active working order, it, baying
suspended operations the Twat few months..
The movement is made in consequence of
the resolutions adopted 44., the recent con-.

freights and fare on river steamers. Only
two or. three prominent steamboatmen,

way. wi!hout much cutting under being
made public At least two inches more
of water was added to the river y esterday.
The Milwaukee came down with the
largest passenger list of the season; She
was literally packed with people fore and
aft, and left McGregor with 300 persons,
having on the down trip booked 1,000
names. She had the down run all to her
self, as the oprwsition boat Dubuque had
been hauled off for repairs.
—Capt.. W. M. Chaney, communicates
the following to the Cincinnati Commercial:
I promise t Capt. Wm. Mars, of tow-twat
Baltic, I would stop and give you the par
ticulars in relation to the loss of his broth
er, Capt. Aleck Mars, on last Monday
night. After a car. fill examination I
found that he had gone out forward, on a
model barge, and instructed the men who
were pumping the barges, in relation to
their duties. The.night was dark, and it
was running, and from all :he evidence it
is supposed, and I am satisfied, that ha f-. 11
off a plank which led fr .m the model barge
to the tow-boat. He was a large man, with
rather coarse features, and painly clad.
