against any change of the present steam
boat law, In case the bill drafted by it at
its session of last October could not become

action was in reference to the sustitute for

pending . . As an indication of their earnest
ness, each inember of the Association
pledged hitnself to pay his proper pr,tpor
tion of any expense that might be necessary
to secure the passe ° of the original bill.
As a measure of ec onomy, the Associatioa
recommended the iadoption, on all steam
boats pl t log the WPstern waters, of what
is called the re.ataurant system of feeding
passengers. declarinr that "title kystem has
proved in practice complete success in
saving the leaks common to a . pass-nger
steamer, in saving of general' expenses of
the cabin, in profit to stewards, and in - the
approbati It of the: traveling public." It
was the opinion of one gentleman that it
would be the Means of securing a better
chats of etewards, and that no man was
fitted to be steward on a first class steam
boat,. who,was not capable of conducting a
first class hotel. - '..
Perhaps'the ablest report made by any
committee to the Association is the one in
which Ciocinnati is now most directiy in
terested—lhat "on the best Mode of pro
ceeding to provind railroad companies from
further obstructing navigation." That re
port was adopted with such unanimity, and
with such earnestness, as to leave no doubt
but that the recommendation with which
the report'oloses—to "continuously, inslah
