Orders executed for the Purchase end Sale of STOCKS, BONDS and GOLD. JAMES T. BRADY & CO. tytt littiburgt &Ott FINANCE AND TRADE. OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, MONDAY. September 28, 1868. The feverish state of gold and govern• meats for the past week, has at least ter minated by a decided decline in gold from 144% on Monday, last to 1403, this after noon, and in', a `corresponding decline of bonds, especially the issues of 1862'5. The cotton and grain crops being larger than anticipated, have aided in sustaining our government bonds in Europe, and as the pending elections promise to be decided without any political disturbances, a con siderable decline in the premium of gold is likely to take place before the end of the year. In the meantime; fluctuations must necessarily occur, and as no gold interest is payable by the United States, before the first of November, higher prices may rule from time to time, as cash gold will contin ue scarce. Private advices from Europe are assuring the war cloud has passed, and any rumors to the contrary are without foundation. Government bonds have been steady without any animation. Large speculative purchases took place on European account at 11535, which are now covering at 113% to 114. The amount of governments in the market is rather limited, and any material decline would lead to an unusually high market caused by contracts, which exceed the stock in the market L-eventually high er prices of governments must ensue. With reference to 'the stock market a fierce contest is now going on between "bulls and bears." The bulls thus far have in their favor an easy money market, and the satisfactory earnings of nearly all their roads, together with a large outstand ing short interest, while the bears contend, that most of the speculative stocks are al ready 'selling above their real value, and are trusting to the assistance of a more ac tive money market- New York Central is strong at 129%, and bought up by men of capital. In Erie a large short interest is outstanding, and some of the directors are said to be short; yet it is considered that the stock is very cheap at the present price. Reading is largely dealt in Boston and Philadelphia, and is likely to go above par. Cleveland & Pittsburgh has taken a decided stand as a dividend paying stock-2 per cent. quar terly—a rise is said will likely take place to about 95, at which figure it is held by large speculators. Rock Island seems to bo at the lowest point, having just s:ood a heavy attack of the bear party. North Western shares are entirely managed by flurrykeep and his friends, and although the stock Is selling far above its real value, yet the clique have an object in view. Fort Wayne looks firm at 1093,1 to 110—a 2% per cent. dividend will be declared October first: Ohio and Mississippi is steady at 29. Express shares are very firm, and a large short interest is at plesent existing, which will carry stocks higher. Business is very dull, but money yet easy, but what the end of the week will bang is more than can be predicted. Closing• quotations as receive Ph. B. Mertz: Gold, 140%; Eighty-one's 113% . September 28, 1868. REMARKS. Some exceptions it seems wore taken to our report of the oil market on Saturday, and some of the dealers affected to be very indignant at that part of it which referred to a bitter feeling existing between the "bulls" and "bears." Now we still stand by it, that is so far as the oil trade, alone, is co. , cerned, and there is not a man i the trade but what knows it is true; tho 01 at the same tina the personal relation be-: tween these parties arc, pleasant, an I all. that could be desired. And right he e Nve take occasion to remark that the oil men as a . clas.s, are a highl3i honorable .of of men, upright to the letter in their bush:moo relations, and gentlemen in every sense of the word. Many of them, however i have their capital invested in oil, and It s but natural that they should work to promote their own interests, even if by so doing they should be classified among what is commonly termed the "bulls" and "bears." We havt• always endeavored to report the business correctly, and while we may have said things that were not agreeable to some parties. we have done so tinier the convic tion that whatever we said was true, and, therefore, have nothing to take back. In the oil business as in everything else, "the truth is mighty and must prevail." MI The market for Crude was again rather quiet to-day, not a single sate renorted. Spot oil may be quoted at 11% to 12c, the inside figure offered, and the outside figure asked. The offerings at quotations do not appear to be very large, while the demand is by no means urgent. There are doubt less some, as there nearly always are, who. are short on maturing contracts of Refined, and these parties will have to buy sooner or later, unless they should secure them selves by buying Refined. • The Refuted market is quiet and weak, with a drooping tendency. Sale of 500 bbls September at 3134 c; I,oou-500 each Novem ber and December at 2914 c, and it was re ported late in the day that there was a sale of 1,500 for September at 30Nc.
