Gold was strong all day at from 1413 to
142%, with an advancing tendency. The
attempt to bring down the market to 140
has failed, and the large short interest
created by the bears makes them ardions
cover as low as they can do.
In Governments the market was rather
strong, but at lower rates. An advance of
gold would bring in large purchasers for
bonds at present quotations. -
Stocks are firm, and rather on the point
of advancing than on a decline; the cliques
are able to buy any stock's offering, even
at quotations, and thereby sustain the mar
ket and assist in advancini,prlces.
Money is easy, but business is rather in
active.

—Says the Chicago Tribune, of Thursday,
says: There was considerably less grain
Paid for at the banks to-day_than usual, as
there was but little movement in the way
of shipments eastward. 'The money mar
ket, however, continues to work very
close. There are indications that some of
the banks, in anticipation of their quarterly
statements, are endeavoring to contract
their line of loaps and discounts, and there
seems a fair prospect that a more pressing
time than has yet been .felt tnis fall, will
be experienced between now and the Sib
of October. The report of the amount of
flour and grain held in store here, on the
night of Saturday. September 19th, shows
an increase of over three_hundred thou
sand bushels of wheat, and, though the
quantity of oats, corn and flour has di
minished, the aggregate value of grain held
here has increased considerably during
last week, and is doing so yet, thus ope
rating to lock up that much capital and
aiding to create monetary stringency:,

OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH /44ZETTE,
FRIDAY, September 25, 1868.
The market for metal ba been less ac
tive this week, which was owing to the bad
weather and excitement attending the
Convention; notwishstanding the sales are
much smaller, in the aggregate, than last
week, the market is firm and prices are
well sustained, and the demand keeps
fully up with the supply. The,receiPts . lay
river have beeh large this week, but the
great proportion of that now arriving will
hive to be put in on old contracts, so, that
the amount really thrown on the market
will not,be as large as many have been led
to believe. - •

CE OFTEXPITTSEURGH GAzETTE,
, FRIDAY, September 24, 1868-
he inclement condition of the weather
ded very much to cripple out-door busi
s to-day, which, at best, has been
ling to brag of for some time past. The
y important feature we have tn notice
in "lineation with the general markets,
is a still further decline
.in Wheat and
Fl. ur in the west. It - was thought some
time since that prices had touched bottom,
an l d it is possible that they may go lower
yet, though the general impression is that
the bottom has been reached.:_ Within the
last sixty days Spring Wheat - Flour has
declined fully two dollars per barrel, and
Spring Wheat is down about 40e per
bushel. WintEr Wheat is also lower, but it
has not declined in proportion with Spring
Wifeat.
APPLES—Are coming in quite freely,.
but with a steady. demand, prices are:
pretty well 13i/stained, ranging from ga to 4
per bbl.
POTATOES—DuII, and cannot be quoted
above $1 per bushel, and $3 per barrel.
Sweets scarcer ; and firmer; t 1.6,00 to RAO
per bbl. ;
BUTTER—Is in better supply, but as yet
prices are unchanged at 35 to 40c.
EGGS—Steady, with sales of fresh packed
at 23c.
CHEESE—Quiet and unchanged at 15 to
16 for Western Reserve and Hamburg; 17
to I.Bc for Factory and Goshen, and 12c to
20c for Sweitzer.
SEEDS—SaIes of Timothy Seed at $3,50
to $3,75, and Flax Seed at $2,45 to $2,50.
Clover Seed Is dull and nominal at $9,75 to
89.
PROVISIONS—Bacon is quiet and nn
hanged at 14 to 14y for Shoulders; 1634 for
Ribbed and 18 to 18 for Clear Sides, and
21 to 22 for Sugar Cured Hams. Lard is
quoted at 20 to 2034 c, in tierces, and 22, in,
kegs. Mess Pork, $3l to $31,50.
CRANBERRIE4-Sales of new crop,
eastern, at $2O to $24.
BEESWAX—Is quoted at 35 to 40c.
LARD OIL—Is quiet and unchanged at
$1,20 for No. 2, and $1,50 for No. 1.
SALT Is l dul dull and unchanged at $1,75
to $l,BO to the trade, and 52, in a retail
way. _
GRAlN—There is nothing doing in
Wheat, and we do not hear of any estab
lished prices; taking the Western markets
as a basis, prime Winter cannot be fairly
quoted above $2. Rye is quiet but un
changed at 51,40. Oats firm with a moder
ate demand at 65 to 66c on track, and 68 to
700 for Small lots in store. Corn is quiet
and a little weak but unchanged; last sales
at $1.14 to $1,17 for mixed to prime Yellow.
Barleyls quiet and in limited supply; No.
2 Chicago may be quoted at 51,90, and
prime Penna. and Ohio at $2.
MILL FEED—Is very drill but nn-
hanged.. at $l,lO for Brin; 51,30 for Ship
stuffs, and $2 for Middlings.
FLOUR—Is dull and weak with a droop
ing tendency. We now quote good to
choice Spring $9 to $9.50. The mills con-
tinue to quote atslo,so for Extra Family, in
barrels, and $10,20, in sacks, and Double
Extra at $ll, in barrels, and $10,70, insacks.
Rye Flour, $8,75.
"WHISKY—The market continues firm
and as but few of the distilleries are in op
oration, in consequence of the high pries of
grain, itis not likely that the supply. which
'snow very light, will be much increased.
We quote at present rectified per gallon
$1,30; highwines per gallon 51,40; half rye
and half corn per gallon $1,75; old Monon
gahela two fears old, per gallon $2,25; and
old Monongahela three years old 53,50
per gallon.
PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF TRH PITTBITHOR GAZETTE,
FRIDAY, September 25, 1868.
The Petroleum market, both Crude and
Refined, was very unsettled, and irregular
to-day, and the fact that Antwerp has drop—
pod two and a half francs, staggered the
bulls soniewhat, and brought the bears out
from their holes. At no time this year,
peihaps, was "bluffing" so much in vogue
as it was to-day: indeed the business seem
ad to have resolved itself into a regular
game of "bluff," and as already intimated
the "bears" seemed to have the hest of the
game. Wild offers were made. both to buy
and sell, and just about as quickly, with
drawn, the main object being to sound
the "partifs" to whom these offers were
made. We are cognizant of nne party hav
ing been "bluffed" into paying' two htul- •
dred barre,s for a "refusal" of one thou-
sand dollars for October a l2M—StlbSe.
qnently the buyer tried to impress the sel
ler with the fact that it was all a joke, but
(the seller) failed to see it In that light.
The Crude market was very unsettled
and irregular to-day; it opened about
where it left off on Thursdey evening, but
as the day advanced, under the influence
of free offers to se 1, prices- fell off -some
what, and closed considerably lower. Sale
of 1,000 each for October ' November and
December at 12c; 1,800 for October at 12350;
600 next fifteen days at 12%c; 1,000, all
year, seller, at 11%c; 1,000 eachfor October,
November and December at 11,;c, and
1,000 for first halt O.tober at 12c. • At the
close, there were offers to sell September
and October at 12c—we heard of oneaffer
having been made to sell October at 113(0.
The market was exceedingly quiet to
day, not a single sale 'report d, though,
compared with yssterday, prices are of
fully half a cent: - We now quote Septem
ber at 32%c, and October at 32c, against 33,
yesterday, for the former, and 32)4c for the
latter.
