Cijs littsintrgij Galrttt FINANCE AND TRADE, OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH. GAZE SATURDAY. September 19, 1868._ The war rumors from Europe having proved false, the Foreign Bankers did their best to get rid of their gold, and sold it down, to-day, to 144%, at which pribe, how ever, only large amounts could be bought on future delivery, the market havin touched 144% to 144%. If it was not for the extraordinary supply of Exchange the market would stand much higher to-day whether there were war rumors or none. The imports are kept up, and the supply of gold on the market is getting more and more reduced and accumulates in the sub treasury. The fair prospects of a Republi can victory in November has induced par tiesto borrow gold on their November in terest, thus selling in advance what may command a much higher price in Novem ber. Further more, large sums of gold have been sold short at about 144, and to cover this with a prat it ought to be bought back at about 143. Lent money be ing cheap, the bulls have but little diffi culty in carrying a large amount of gold at no interest at all. Government bonds stilt _remain very in active, and thongh lt• '.claimed that they "are cheap, especially - the,:_new bonds, yet investors are very timid in buying; the only borids that have advanced are the old 186.5 and 1864 5-20'8, which were supposed to be coming back from Europe for ex change, but were shipped only ln small lots. Ten Forties have lost their prestige, and are neglected. The best reason given for the neglect of goyeniments at present is the excited and precarious condition of the stock market; the bulls have thrown their whole force ,on that, and - have their funds engaged. A prudent observer willsee that an early decline in the Wick market is inevitable, and stocks will carry down bonds, although they would immediately advance again in order to' employ the capi tal disengaged by stock speculation. - The stock 'market is entirely under the control of the bulls; if the bears are svilling to be bled and are in a condition to heed, then much higher prices may ensue, and a large number of firms may be crippled. It seems that Monday morning _will wit ness a fresh rise; the timid holders having sold out to -day, and the bears succeeded in getting but a small amount of stocks; the rise, 'however, does not, seem to be carried over the entire list.' New York Central' 14 the strongest on the list, and is the main dependence of the bull party. , Business is improying, and money easy. Closing quotations as received . by, Ph. R. It- is authorita tively stated from Washington that the Sherman Funding bill, as it is called, which passed both houses of Congress just before the recent adjournment, failed to become a law for want of the signature of the President. The bill known as the Funding bill must repass both Houses by a two. thirds vote before it can have any legal effect. —The following statement exhibits the business of the Pittsburgh Clearing Rouse for the• week ending Saturday, Septem ber 19th Exchanges. OFFICE CF THE PITTSBURGH GAZ,hri SATURISAY, September, 19, 1868. The markets, in general, have been mod erately active during the past week, there having been a fair volume of business, in the aggregate, though there is, 'neverthe less, plenty of room for , improvement. The course of the oil market during the past week, which has just closed, has been by no means a smooth one, having been characterized by that irregularity and tin . certainty which has prevailed for some time past, and which, from present, indi come. Thor has. nevertheless, has. cations, will ontinue for several weeks to been a fair volume of b iness, in the aggregate, the sales comin up to the usual average. E/ „e Prices were eak and drooping until Fri day, and to sty, when a firmer feeling - I sprung up, es cially for early deliveries. and a slight dvance f,r both Crude and. Refined was established. The receipts of Crude during the week footed up 22,80.4 barrels, againat 20,670 barrels last week, and fr .m January Ist until date, 765,036 barrels. The exports of refined were 18,- 1 336, against 117,120 last week, and since *January Ist, 477,933, against 447,528, cor responding tine last year, showing an in creesie of 30,405 bbls. Sales this , week of 1 0 • both Crude nd Refined footed up . 95,500 bbls, against 100 last week, showing ask increase of 4.5, barrels. • : CRUDE. The marks although. Arm. was again very quiet to- ay, with but a single sale re ported,l,ooo bls, to be delivered between October Ist a' d December Ist, seller'sop-- tion, at 11c. • 'Spot oil—not a single- re ported; held ,LIX to 11qc, with no buy ers at anythi g. over eleven. The main cause. for, the rnines. in Spot oil lies in the fact that Refi ad_ is also a shade better .611 - z immediate de very, as Well as to the fact that thq supply here is light, and there is but little offering. 'As will have been seen, however, the, improvement, as yet, does not *amount to much, as the advance,:is very slight, and in regard to the intore, opinions are very conflicting. ORO party en , ertatns hopes that a reaction and better prices has set in, while - another equally as strong, contend' that big .ptice9dOring the remainder of this season is not at all prob able. ' BE 'fl ... The market for' Refined was also very quiet to-day, though September and Octo ber are fully as strong as they were yester day, while November and December - are entirely nominal. There are some slight apprehensions of an attempt to bring about a "corner" between now and the first of. October, rand ii is this that has stiffened the market these months. There were but two sales reported, one of 500 and the other tOOO, both for October and , both at 29%c. September is also quoted strong at the same figure. November is nominal at 28 ..c, lind December at 28%c; a5l 'the Year, 11 . seller's o ion, at 27;40, and same delivery, buyer's op ion, at 29%0. . . ECEIPTS CRUDE OIL. Fisher &B i l l 80 I Jas.
