FINANCE AND TRADE, OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, FRIDAY, September 18, 1868. Gold was very strong to-day without any material advance; the lowest point touched was 144%, from which it advanced to 1443 g. Indications for a further rise are based on the scarcity of gold in making deliveries, and the cheapness of money'to carry large lots at a small cost. The war rumors from Eur pa find little credit. InAlavernments' the market is dull and inactive for all the new bonds; the Five Twenties of 1862, are, higher; ,also, 1864'5. It is found out how that ' 'the' amount's of old bonds, said to be in 'transit ,to be,,,re-' shipped and exchanged for new b ond s are which accounts for 'the ne glect bf the new bonds and the rise in the old ones. The country is very bare, of bond and a continuance of an cagy money n3ar t would send up new bonds some two o three per cent. The offerings to sell are li Red, and buyers are 'equally scarce. Th stock market is still higher to-day in New ork Cen ral, lteading Pacific ,mail,, Nort Western Rock Island end Michigan Southern; Cleveland and Pittsburgh is rathei lower, Fort Wayne steady, pie an-, &tinged, Ohio and Mississippi, X per cent. better, and the miscellaneous shares all higher without any.demand for stacks; the bulls have it all their own way, putting up quotations and forcing parties to cover at advanced figures._ -Expr.as shares are less active, and have reacted. ,Tha rise in stocks and bonds will culminate the , mo ment the shorts have covered, and a heavy reaction, is inevitable. - -•- gE;g Business is very quiet—nioney.east. - Closing quotatiops as received by Ph.
