OFFICE OF THE PITTSEITRGE GAZETTE, WEDNESDAY, September, 16, 1868. The Main election liad been discounted yesterday. To-day the market opened strong at 144 g, an advance of 3 1 ; per cent. over yesterday, and gradually rose to 14-134. Gold is scarcer, and loaning is flat; the short interest outstanding uncovered is Still very large, and, in all probability, the bullsjwill.t.wist beats by advancing quo tations. War rumors from Europe give the market additional strength, and will aid the, bull party more than their own schemes. The goyernment bond market was firm early in the day, butt owards noon fell off ab(Mt 34 per cent. It is the large short sales predicated on a close money market that sustains prices at present, and the New York journals in the interest of the large dealers which constantly speak of• large investments made by savings bank., whilst it is Well known that these institu tions need all th.-ir funds for ordinary business purposes. The slightest agitation caused by the hostile attitude of France towards Prussia may cause a decline of two per cent. of our securities, especially the old denominations. The stock market is galvanized by the clique operators who are anxious to make a grand raid on tire bears in. the present • oversold condition of the market. Closing quotations as received by Ph. R. The sales-- of this stock have greatly increased within tho last three months, and there is reason to believe that a very large amount of the purchases within that time have been for ,New,York.accnuute-:It t. now that some ortbe great : rallalmailegz , rs of-that city have been considerably annoyed by the Pennsyl ania road, in its competition with them for the trade of the great We-t. I It is quite in the way of New York railway manage's to buy nut where they cannot otherwise effect their purpese, and as fre quent negoti .tions on oints in difference with the Pennsylvania Company have . proved unsuisfactory, the threat has base:: openly trnle, that they would 'find other - and more eirect, means of effecting the un animity desired—they would possess theni ealves of a controlling interest by buying up the stock. The recent operations In that city in the open attempt of the New York Central - to swallow, the NeW York and Erie, proves that the gigantic propor tions Man undertaking of the sort is no' bar to the effort to effect it. In buying up the control of the Pennsylvania road, there is this impor ant fact in favor of the propo sition that did not, nor does not, exist with the New York and Erie. The fact that both Wheat and Flour have reacted and advanced slightly in Chicago, caused a slight commotion in commercial circles, and there are some who a`re impressed with the belief that the bottom )as been touched. This may be the case, temporarily, but unless a sharp foreign d .mand should spriog up, causing large foreign shipments, the chances are that there will be another reaction, and lower. prices than we have yet had. GROCERIES-The Grocery market is reported more active, consequent, mainly on the resumption of navigation, 'and with an increased jobbing demand, the volume of business is increasing, while prices, compared with last week, have undergone no material change.
