the first member of any royal family who

—'On the occasion- of the rejoicings in
Paris on the fate day of Napoleon, August
15th, an Englishman was desirous of hiring
an apartment commanding a full view of
the fire-works. After a great deal of trouble
he found one in the evening, and throwing
himself into the arm chair, opened thewin
dow, and told his servant to retire. Being
tired he feel asleep, and awoke at midnight'
to find it raining and dark. His two hours'
slumber cost him $9O.
—An anecdote is told of a German stu
dent in theology, who, after waiting a long
time for admission, appeared before the
examiner "bearded dike a pard." The
learned examiner fell back , astonished, ex
claiming: "A student in . theology with a
beard!" "A beard!" cried the student,
with an air of equal astonishment, and put
ting his hand up to his face, "bless me, why
it must have grown while I have been wait
ing in the ante-room I"
—A riot occurred at a peach preserving
establishment in Cincinnati last week. A
crowd of men and boys attempted to come
in and help themselves to peaches but were
resisted by the male employes, about thirty
in number, armed with peeling knives and
hot soldering irons, who succeeded in driv
ing off the thievish mob, but not before some
400 girls employed in the establishment had
become frightened and run away, leaving a
large amount of half - done peaches to spoil
before they returned.
—The Passumpsic river is spoken of as a
"liquid corkscrew" It is a most crooked
stream of water, and is fully entitled to the
name given it. The stream is not a large
one, but it furnishes motive power - for in
numerable mills and manufactories, and is
therefore regarded with kindly feelings
by the inhabitants. The railway is obliged
to cross it about thirty times in the space of
twenty-five miles, and in one sectiOn of
seven miles there are eleven bridges, aver
aging thirty-five feet in length.
