calling a meeting of all who desire the election of
Gem, 1: RANT, with a view to concert of action.
This conclusion was arrived at without consulta
tion With any politician or political Execut Ire Com
mittee, and on induenced by suggestions from such
parties.
When Treason dared to attempt the overthrow of
our Uovernment, and the disruptiewor the Luton.
we waited not toconsult our former political parties
or their leaders, or to sue on which side our party •
might range itself, but we al!= Democrats, Repub
licans and Dell-Everett men—sprang promptly to
arms to save oar common country from its toes.
And now that the excitement of conflict Is passed,
the clash or arms hushed, our musket; and accou
trements laid aside, amid the comforts and oulet of
home we •look b telt on our patriotic course with
pride, mingled only with tears over the memory of
our fallen comrades: not one feeling of self reproach
mars the retrospect, although we recollect that
amang our companions lit arms were many who had
been our . polit teal opponents, and am mg, our foes
were some whom we had revered and followed as
political guides and oracles.
At the close of the war, soult, who Lad gone away
Democrats returned 'Republicans. but not a few came
hoa with .the expectation of again acting and
voting with the once glorious Democratic Party—
hoping and believing that it had seen and repented
Its errors. hone of us have. indeed, billet: our re
turn, supported nominees of the De:Auer:ale party.
But now that another general election hnpends,
it is our duty again to choose sides—not ; arti
eani, but as patriots. A true Union soldier can
,• never become a mere party man.
Realizing this, the Undersigned address this Call
to their fellow soldiers, not In behalf of a political
party or its nominees. but In behalf of the Peace
and Prosperity' of our Nation, which are again
threatened. Had the Democratic party spurned the
dictation of Wade Hamptonand ni4 co-traitors, and
offered us a loyal, honest, Linton , pmtf
Hancock_or souse other candidate having a good
war record, some of the uudeYslgned would not
nave Ij'olued in issuing this call. But with such a
platform and ticket, championed by Wade Hamp
ton, Forrest, t.:eraines. Cobb, TooWbs, Wise and
other like traitors, we cannot hesitate as to our
course. To say that the threats of these known en
crake of the. IR ion mean nothing Is worse tban
folly; they proved themselves terribly In earnest
before, and we have every reason to believe that
they are equally so now.-
Regarding this contest as a renewal of that we
helped tO decide! the field, we have once more laid
aside all party feeling and have re-enlisted under
the noble soldier who led us to victory after others
had failed. -Gen. (TRANT is not and cannot become
11 party man—he is a true, earnest, faithful friend
of the UnlOn. The Republican party Icannot claim
him; though the nominee of that parity, he is, in
fact, the candidate of the true Union men of the
Nation, just as Horatio Seymour is the candidate
of the Southern traitors, Hampton, Foqest, Senunt s
& Co,. though nominally the Democratic candidate.
We invite all honorably discha , gedlsoldiers and
sailors in the 'county, who. though ever ready to
Sght for the Union, yet prefer peace to war, to meet
us at CITY 11,\EL, on THURSDAY EVENING,
Sept. 10th, at lo'clock, 'to cdusider the expediency
of organizing an Independent ,Vetersin Corps. If
