PITTSBURGH GAZETTE: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1868
MmR 'NMWS
. ,
The river appeared to be rising slowly
last evening with three . feet full in the
channel by the 'Monongahela pier mark.
The weather continues clbudY' and unset
tled with every appearance of more rain.
There has been no arrivals or departures..
since the date of our last 'report. If the
water does not go down, of which there is
but little prospect at present, we may ex
pect quite a fleet of tow boats in about Fri-'
day or Saturday.
The Bayard which boat left hereon Tues
day for Buffington, had no less than two
hundred and five passengers, all of them
tow boatmen. They were sent down to
bring up quite a fleet of tow boats that have
been laid up there daring the greater part
of the Summer.
Cant. Dan. Moore left for Cincinnati on
Tuesday to lead the McCullough for Pitts
bnrgh. .
Capt. Geo. D. Moore went out In charge
of the Bayard, Cant. Shepard being unable
to leave home for the present.
The Messenger was hauled up to the up
per end of the landing yesterday and will,
we presume, commence loading for some
point—most[robably New Orleans. '
The Kate utnam,, Armadillo, Armenia,
Grey Eagle, nd a number of other beats
are at the far :dingiready to commence busi
ness
as soon as there is an opening.
—The Camelia passed Marietta -on Tues
day
enroute form Pittsburgh to St. Louis.
—Nashville napers'of. Sunday report the
Cumberland rising again, with 4 feet on I
Ilarpeth Shoals.
—The little towboat Liberty No. 3 was
sold at privatb saleat Cincinnati on Satin ,
day, for $2,500. Parties from Ironton were
the purchasers. ,
.I . •
—The steamer Cam 1) T inelia and . Butler,
lying agrolind for several days past at Car
penter's Bar and Buffington, are ,rellev,ed
from their unpleasant position by the re
cent rise, and are on their to Cincinnati.
The Camelia is bound for St. Louis.
—Captain John J. Adams, of the Mem
phis and Arkansas Packet Company, has
st co
ro ntracted with Messrs. Vance & Arm
hg, of Madison, for tne construction of
two boats to ply in that trade, one of
which is to receive the machinery now in
the steamer Gleaner.
—A St. Louis telegram under date of
Tuesday says: The river is steadily de
clining, with six feet , water to Cairo, four
feet to Keokuk, six feet on lower Missouri,
and three feet between St. Joseph and
0maha...... Heavy rains have fallen along
the Upper Mississippi, which may improve
navigation some ' The Keokuk packets
will adopt the restaurant Plan for meals at
once.
