FINANCE AND TRADE,
01PFIcra OF , THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
• TUESDAY, September 8, 1868.
All sorts of rumors are resorted to in
order to advance the price of gold on those
who sold short in expectation that the
.
September payments would have a tenden
cy to depress the premium. The imports
of foreign merchandise continue large and'
3 00.000 doltii* is, daily needed for custom
house phrposea. IThestock of gold in the
banks is diminishing rapidly, and so far
every thing.favors .higlier. Anotations for
gold although the large yield of grain, cot
ton and other products will keep a fall
supply of exchange, and no gold need be'
shipped before next January.
Government bonds keep firm especially
the;new issues which are bought up now
or exchanged for old Five-Twentles of 1862
and 1805; the investment demand, however,
is still -light and there are more sellers
then buyers from the West.
Stocks are merely kept up by cliques
under the present easy money, market;
any change towards stringency, may bring
down stock like a card house; Specula
tion in Railroad securities is very tame,
and many of the usual operators have lost
nearly all they made during the last siX
months. A few houses may combine and
raise the rate for call loans by making
money scarcer and a panic in stocks is
inevitable; although the clique operatore
bare shown more strength then any body
believed them to possess.
Express shares are on the Wane, and are
likely to go down much more.

roads were introduced there used to be
twice a year—in the fall.and spring—a per
fect avalanche of , buyers from all- sections
of the Union, who would purchase enough
to last them for the half year, but now the
telegraph has changed all this. Instead of
buying large quantities at' one time, they
order by wire a case as they need it, and
the railroad carries it to them.. This ena
bles them alwaYsi to keep -their - stock up
without visiting the principal cities, and
al-o avoids' the risk of having a large stock
of goods on hand in case prices -decline.
Formerly our business men were busy all
night, as well as day, filling their orders
and sending goods off. Now, nearly all . the
work can done in the' rdinary hours of
labor as th- purchasers are more equitably
distributed throughout the year... The
cities, however, still have their busy perl.,
ode, which occur at much the same time of
thb Year as formerly. The excitement of
the Presid ntial campaign may poisibly
delay the season, but the general opinion is
that it will have very little
.effect.- 7 /%4a.

The decline In Floarand Wheat is about
Che,only imprtant characteristic: nOtiCtet
ble in the general market to-day. Nor is
it probable that the bottom has vet been-,
reached, judging from present indicatiorun
with half a million of bu,hels of Grain
going into Chicago daily, and the receipts
in all of the leading mars:ets in about the
same ratio, stilt lOwer ,prices seem almost
inevitable. The supply of Flour in Chicago
is also unusually heavy, being fully six
times larger than it was at this time last'
year; and the arrivals there for some days
past have run from fifteen to sixteen thou
sand barrels.
APPLES—In consequence of diminished
receipts, the market Is considerably firmer
and are now quoted at $3 to $4 per bbl.

and $3,50 pert bbl. - Jersey Sweets scarce
and higher, 16,50 to $7 per bbl.

ranging from 37 to 40.

mand at $2,23 to ;$2,30. Timothy Seed Is
scarce and is held at $3,75 to $4, in a retail
way. Clover Seed is nominal at $7,50 to $B.
'FLAY—SaIes at Allegheny Diamond
market Of 49 loads at $23 to $34 per ton, ac-,
cording to quality
CHEE*E—Is firm but unchanged at 14
to 16c for Western Reserve and Hamburg;
17 to !Soler Factory and Goshen and 20 for
Sweitzer.
SALT—Is di l .illand uncharted at $1,75 to
$l,BO to the trade, and $2, for small lots in
store: ' •
GRAlN—Nirheat is quiet and unchanged.
and there is but little inquVy aside from
the mills; we continue to quote at 82,08 to
82,10 for Red, and 3 to 5c higher for White.
Oats unchanged-4ales of 2 cars at 65c
maybe quoted at 68 to 70c, in store. Sale '
of 1 car mixed Corn at sl,l2—prime Yellow
is held at $1.15. Barley is scarce and "
wanted, and No. 1 Spring may be quoted
strong at $2. Rye is quiet, with hardly
enough doing to establish quotations; we
,
quote 81,40 as the nominal price.
LARD OIL—Is firm but unchanged, no
withstanding Lard is higher; we continue
to quote No. 2 at $1,20, and No. 1 at $1,50.
PROVISIONS—Bacon is steady but un
changed at 14W: to 14lic for Shoulders;
1634 to 16%c for Ribbed, an'i 1835 to 18%c

quote at 81,10 for Bran; $1,30 for Shmstuffs,

FLOUR—The demand is fair, nOtwith
standing the market 'is weak, with a
drooping "tendency; it is a noticeable fact,
however, that buyers, generally, are' re
stricting their purchases as much as possi
ble, in expectation of a still further reduc-.
tion. The "Pearl" and "City Mills" con-,
thine to quote Extra Family at $10,50, in. --
bbla and $10,20, in sacks; and Double Extra

PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OP TEE PITTSBURGH' GAZETTE,
TUESDAY, September 8, 1868. 5
The market was again very qUiet to-day,
not a single sale' reported, and while the
feeling seemed to be a little offish, prices is
as vet have undergone no quotable change.„
Spot oil is still held at 12, but, for the pres
ent there are no buyers at that figure; in
deed, as noted in our last report, twelve
cents seems to bethc i asking price fur any
delivery between ow and January lat.
From January untilfluly,seller's option, 10
cents is the nominal price -there his 'been
no sales for that particular deltVery for
some time, but the last sale reported was
at the figure. There was a sale of 1,000 bbls
reported at 14,50, on cars at 011 City.
The market vies moderately active, the
sales aggregating 5,500 bbls,! bat prices, as
will be . seen, are. a shade• lower. Select'
2,000 bbls.for first half of September at
30%c; three lots of 500 each for October at •
31c; 500 for November at 310, and 500 each •
for September, October and November at •
3l c. At the close, it was reported that
there were offers to, sell November and
December at , 3034 c, and we. heard of 30,40
being offered for immediate delivery. On
