RIVER NEWS.
—Capt. James Good has sold barge No.
37, at St. Louis, to the Mississippi Valley
Transportation Company for $5OO.
--The Steamboat 'agency firm at Mem
phis, of Levy ek, Miller, was dissolved on
the first inst. Capt. Levy withdraws and
assueiates himself with Mr. J. B. Sharpe,
late of Pine Bluff.
—A St.Lortis exchange says: Three trans
portation lines are now candidates for
through New Orleans business—the Atlan
tic and Mississippi Steamship Company,
and the towboat Atlantic and her three
barges. The latter made a trip in the M.
V. line, but now goes alone.
—Capt. Charles Muhlman on Thursday
purchased of the Louisville Mail Line
Company the fine steamer Major Ander
son, and will put her in the place of the
Potomac, recently burned between Cin
cinnati and Wheeling, as soon as the water
permits. Terms of sale private.
—A Louisville telegram says: The snag
boats are lying at Cairo, instead of being at
work removing obstructions. Gen. Weit
zel is here surveying the falls, preparatory
to making one or more wing darns, instead
of improving the canal. It appears that
the Congressional appropriations are for
river improvements, and not a dollanis to
be used toward making the canal navi
gable., •
—The Cincinnati Enquirer, of Friday,
says: The sub-municipal committee ad
vise the appropriation of means as deiired
by the, citizens committee to defray the ex
penses of Cincinnati in part with other
cities interested in the -improvement of

Captain John O. Carr. clerk of the Annie
Laurie, met with a severe accident by be
ing caught by a falling fender, His right
ear was partially torn from the head, the
side of his head and face badly bruised,

the circumstances, his escape from instant
death was miraculous.
—The Cairo correspondent of the Cincin
nati Commercial, writes as Tollows: The
Petroha Is at work pulling snags near
Cumberland Island. It is a great pity the
_Long and Abert are lying so long idle at
Mound City at a time when the rivers are
at so favorable a stage of removing snags.
As it is alleged, they are kept there on
account of sickness, ;I think it would be
advisable to have efficient medical officers,
well supplied with medicines, to be ap
pointed to each snagboat, and the push the
work with energy. If a crew becomes sick,
secure anotbee. The low water season is
always the sickly season, and, if the boats
are to be laid up on that account, we must
pronounce them a failure, Prompt medi
cal aid on board the J. J. Abort might pos
sibly have saved the life of her comman
der, the lamented Captain Dodson. as ho
could not obtain the services of a physician
until he arrived at Cairo—some days after,
he was attacked by disease.
