i Otlitt*•i#:,,7:4**.. LEI'TEII FROM BR 001dYN, N.Y. The Vermoni Election—lts Consequences (Correspondence Pittsburgh Gazette.] BItO9ICLTS, September 2d, 1868, When I came down to the sitting room, this_morning, a gentleman guest of, the family I am - visiting, laid down his paper and prepared to make himself agreeable, by. listening to any remarks on the matter which might'be in order. To my request that.-I might not disturb him he replied politely,' that it was of no. consequence; whin I insisted that he should go on read-, ingi he said he had only been lookingrover thee netts from Vermont. Think of it, ! A Union officer who was wounded in the Wilderness near the close of his three years' service, lay months in the hospital, one fully sensible that a defeat at the palls would compel the. boys in bine to shoulder their muskets once , more or see their Government under the feet of the Confederacy, sitting reading the news of that victory as calmly -as Grant received the reports, or issued orders while the tempest of the Wilderness howled around . . on every side I I was -all out of patience with him, as I have always been' out of patience with, Grant fora not saying soiree thing; but I suppose that in the general divison of labor, one class of folks always win the victories-and another 010 the talk ing. - As my Silent companion, of this morn ing, contributed something , tdwards this last as well as Wirer victories or freedom, -let me help with the talking, as I= belong to that division of, the: army. Let me say,to the , mothers, and wives, and sisters, whose dear ones lie , in Southern graves, "give thanks; give thanks to-day!" Not as the fool dyeth did they lay down their lives!. Not lirvam did their ,prayers arise froin Southern charnel houses. Not in vain 'did they endure the - knawings of hunger and vermin, and alternate hope and de spair., Not In vain did they bear the cow ard blow and insult and sneer of the sav age foe. Not in vain did they sit under - the scorching summer sun and shiver -in the winter snow, with uncovered headi, and bodies from which thin modicum of rags dropped piecemeal. Not in vain did they inhale the deadly miasma of the filth into -which they were purposely thrown, and -drink the essence of sewers forced to their lips more persistently than the cup of wormwood to those of the dying' Savior. Not in _vain did they shriek and rave in the phrenzy - of insanity, and die in the anguish of despair. Our prisoners, our outraged, murdered prisoners of war, who stand be fore the throne and cry, "How, , 0 Lord, Holy and True, dost Theu not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth." - He is judging. He will avenge. Never again will he permit these blood-stained mur derers to rule the land they sought to des troy, or by the crooked ways of diplomacy crush the brave man who has conquered them in open fight. Their days of power are gone forever. They can • never again extort their bread from the unpaid toil of the laborer. God's inevitable laws of life will avenge their long violation of them, and the manifold crimes which sprang from their contempt of , labor, by leaving them to the lot they have chosen; and the humilia tion, and want, and extermination, which lies in the path of all races and classes of men who neglect or rernte to work for life —for, life temporal- as well as spiritual. Therels no continued life without labor,• and, so far • as the Southern people were and are a band of idlers they are doomed to ex termination. .180 far as they were the op pressors of the weak, and murderers of the defenceless, they have placed themselves -outside the lines of those who shall "inherit the earth." God is adjudging them to the retributive vengance of ignominy and in /significance. Tor years I have trembled lest for the :sins of the Repubhcan party—electing Johnson, failing to remove him, taxing loyal men to pay the expenses of the war, while refusing to confiscate the property of rebels for - that purpose, and other, such com promises with the spirit-of darkness—it would: be -overthrown, our. ceountry once -Mare' - plunged in the terrible vortex to war; but Use danger is past. The, news from Veimont, studies the hand-writing .on the wall,*tells that we shall have peace. Not the peace of a, craven surrender to a 'to a conquered foe, but that peace for Which -our hero martyrs died—that peace for which I have beard their very lips pray, as Death --found them on filthrtioors - Vithout a pil low which the band of love might turn. -Oh, My brave, brave boys,: - whose noble - souls went out from the mangled bodies I • bad pillo wed on bricks and broken boards, your sacrifice was not in vain. The land you loved and died for vfill have peace and prosperity in the approvrg -smile of God. JANE G. ElWP.snamr.. poselp About the Beecher 14mIly. A correspondent of a Western paper says "The other day, riding to Lake Mohopae, I came upon' a man with a familiar firs. It •was about two miles out of Peekskill,:near • ' - the Hudson. The'man was in shirt sleeves, holding a grubbing hoe in his hand, and directing some workmen at putting down draining tiles. He had a 'enn-liurrit skin, with a sanguine expression looking through it, a tolerably corpulent body, and a pair of riding boots upon his legs. This, was Henry Nerd Beecher, summering on his celebrated Westchester county farm, a place on the top -of a high, almost mountain landscape; which was, a few years back, a stony, sterile -spot: By work and money, liberally Sp- I plied, he has made it both valuable and inautifur . His house, for the present, is a . small frame cabinet, chiefly piazza, set far up a lane, with a prospect of green field sloping clown to the road; and under a large btittonwood tree, it I mistake not, a space before the house, they have held two - or three family marriages. And we hereby promise to use Our in fluence in persuading the lovers of a f. ee and vital christianity to contribute toward this philanthropic enterprise that it may be carried on and extended. A resolution highly recommendatory of the work called "ftepublican Methodism" was passed by a unanimous vote. A letter from.
