RIVER NEWS

The river continues to swell oly at
this int with about thirty-three inches
in the hannel, according to the Mononga
pt
hela pi r marks, and something over four
feet re orted at Brunot. This 'swell, It
seems, emanated In the Youghiogheny
river, but little rain having fallen at the
Upper end of the Monongahela, and ac-
Fording to our latest advices, there is no
_prospect of a rise in the Allegheny. We
hadseveiarheavv.showers of rain yester
day, and the indications last evening were
favorable for more.
The recent rains drew quite a number of
steamboatmen to the river all of whom en
tertained strong hopes of a rise; but, we
fear that fbr the present, at least, they are
doomed to disappointment.'
Capt. Andy Robinson, Jr., is here look
ingafter the Glasgow, which boat he has
taken charge of. Capt Robinson, we may
remark, is looking 'remarkably well, and
is in first-rate condition tor business.
We regret to learn that the wife of Capt.
A. S. Shepard of the Bayard, died very sud
denly at the homestead, in Wellsville, Ohio.
The disease which terminated her life so
suddenly was apoplexy.
The following boats are now at the land-
ing ready to resume business as soon as 1
navigation fairly opens: Bayard, Grey
Eagle, Glasgow Armadillo, Kenton, Kate
Putman. Messenger and Armenia. We
understand that If the river should get up
to four feet, the Bayard will lead off in the
Parkerburg trade.
Capt. Jesse Dean, of the Messenger. more
recently of the Camelia, was in the city
yesterday.
—Capt. Andy Robinson left Cincinnati
for Pittsburgh, on Wednesday evening,
by rail. -
—Capt. Anawalt is in Cincinnati su
perintending repairs now being made on
the Wild Duck;
. —Mr. G. M. Thrasher,
late clerk of the
steamer Anna, received an appointment,
yesterday, as Internal Revenue Store
keeper for the Sixth Kentucky Congres
sional District.
—The St. Marys, which has been lying
at Shippingsport for some time has been
thoroughly repaired and repainted, and
will enter the N. 0. trade' about the 10th
Inst. Capt. Sweeny will command her.
—Boats experience more trouble at Is
land No. 30 than at anv other between
Cairo and Memphis. The Continental
grounded at that place and last consider
able time. She was compelled to lighten
over the bar.
—The Evansville Journal, of Tuesday,
says; Capt. A. Litter, formerly a citizen
of Evansville, and well known in maratime
and commercial circles, is in the city. He
is now residing on his farm up Green Riv
er. He reports that the growing tobacco
crop is the best grown for 'many years.
—An exchange very properly remarks:
It Is no wonder the steamboat business is
dull, and the railroads get freights. Half
the time a shipper can't get any knowl
edge of when a boat is going to leave. It
is a bad plan to say you aro going one day,
and then leave a week afterward. If you
say you are going' to leave to-day, or to
morrow,, go; don't deceive ahipoers and
merchants, for you'll lose by the operation
in the long run.
—A Cairo dispatch, under date of Wed
nesday, says: The America passed down
well-laden. The Ella Hughes brought 100
rolls leather, 250 pkgs bar iron, 50 tuns
metal, for St. Louis; 20 tuns hollow-ware
and flour for the South. Theelocal paekets
had moderate trips , for reshipment South.
The Belle Memphis, from Memphis for St.
Louis, passed up. The river rose 3,lnclies.
The Maggie Hays has at length concluded
to load here for. St. Louis, taring cement
saved front the Tennessee; she will leave
to-morrow. Wm. Hamijton, engineer,
purchased the naval propeller Tansy, yes
terday, at auction, for $450, The United
States snagboat, S. H. Long, passed here to
day. bound for the Missouri river; officers
and crew in excellent health and spirits.
—The New Orleans papers announce that
Capt. T. P. Leathers of the Vic k s ourg packet
Gen. Quitman, has discharged from em
ployment on his steamer all persons not
members of the Democratic party, where
upon, a ineetlng is held at Poit Coupeo, and
it wasstated, that, "Whereas, It has be
come the settled policy of the Democracy
of this State not not to give, employment or
Kipp°, t ofany kind to members of the Rad
ical party;" and resolved that "thanks aro
due, and are] hereby returned to Capt. T.
P. Leathers, of the steamer Quitman; for
being thu first among steamboatmell lo take
this important step, which is calcnlatdd to
contribute largely to the anemia; of the bem
ocratlc party in this State." Wo take these
particulars from the New Orleans Times of
the 20th ult., which comments favorably
upon the action taken.. A planter writes to
the Republican that he paid last year to the
General Quitman $OOOO freightage on cot
ton, and in consequence of the• discharg
ing of the colored crew because they, would
not join a Domocratio club, ho will not
ship another pound:of freight on her.
