Brief Hints for the Season.
Weeds iri paetnses:ere '
apl to be neglected
at and:not only Present a dls
agreeable appearance to the eye of the neat
ifaniter, but ripen and scatter seedi to the di ,
.
arrarent 'of Many future crops. If they
grow in thick patches, cut them down tvlth
a mowing machine, but scattered mullen,`
bull thistles. &c., may - be cut up singly with
sharp grub hoe. •
'Weeds income potatoes, and other hoed
crops, frequently spring up considerable
numbers as a sort of Second growth after
the fields have been kept clean up to the
present time. It is very important, and will
save much future weeding to destroy these
wee& while they are yet green and soft, and
fbave not formed Reds. Many sorts will
tear alhousand seeds on asingle plaut, and
if a tenth part of these grow, they will
make a hinfired the first year, ten thousand
the second; a million the • third, a hundred
million the and tenthousand million
the fifth--=which enough cover a
thousand acre farm with =twenty plants 'to •
the square foot, and crowd out every ves
tige.of a croplf allowed I to remain. It is
better to destroy the first plant.
Stubble:ground May_ be cleared of Mostbf
its weeds by running over it,with - finrci*S;
about-two feet or More apart,and then tar- - ,
towing the whole. The weeds Will spring
tip in pritfusidii, and the 'first plowing: will ;
turn therwholifcrop under. On soft mellow
ground, harrovting alone Will'answer. - t•
~ F iteding animals should; be commenced'
early , in the, season - the earlier the better z,
when the same amount of food will aecotn

anent, nearly double' the — amount of pork
from the same quantity of feed as compared
with` till@ cOlimcin practice.
Straw stacks, from early thrashed grain,
should be made as carefully as stacks of
' Straw isjyal, tiable inniftily ways, and
; is well worth saving bright and clean, in-'
stead of being thrown into irregular heaps;
- to become irregularly soaked withrains and
spoiled for' all use.- - Much bay May
be saved when built, in stacks by, handsome
ly finishing the top with a, load or two ~of
goottstraw. : • •
Harvest tools, as well as all other, teals,
ttlktdaY they are done- with, should ,be
*mildly cleaned and brushed bright, "and
then securely plaCed under shelter. We are
gl a d t o , be•able to say that it is now Much
rarer to see horse rakes , and mowing ma

storms, than fonnerly. • . •
,Draining wet lands in many instances
'an be done only during the present season.
It should, therefore, be done promptly, and
theresult will often be an increased crop
the first year, sufficient to pay the :abor.
Muck swamps may frequently be drained
'without difficulty during the month of Au
gust or early,ln September, and will afford '
valuable supplies of material• for' compost
heaps and for barn Yard dreisingi. 'Being
usually the driest at this period of the year,
it may be' shovelled' put into heaps more
readily, and with mush leas labor than
soaked with water. If the outfaces of these
are made steep, and are beaten snfooth' with
thejipade, they will throw off water'and be
come little affected 'inside. A covering - of
..straw will be still more effectuaL The muck
- will then: tie dry when drawn for use, in the
early part of winter; and, be more valuable
-as an absorbent than - if previously saturated
