=M CI 'MME OH MIT E PITTSIMMOR GAZETTE, _ FRIDAY. August 28, 1868. The market for Cattle, sines , the date of ourlast review, Wednesday evening, has been moderately active, the sales, in the aggregate, being abonlitilargees usual at ,this time in the 'week. Most of ,the delphid buyers leave for home on Wednes day evening, and about the only buyers in attendance yesterda,y and - to-day, were stock-growers from the eastern part of the State, with the exception of one or two, who ship to New York. There was a fair sup , ply of cattle in the pens to-day, hut the .'majority of them were through C'attle, and, as a consequence, were not offered here; the supply on - sale, however, was ~ about (3qual to the demand, and while prime ;hipping and good stock Cattle continue to Aeet with-a steady demand, common and scalawag stock is ahout as dull as over. As will be seen by reference to sales, prime to extra fat cattle sold at from 7 to 74c, and one very choice drove of Indiana steers brought B;4c. August 28.—The Dry Good ' s market Partakes of the increased activity, and Where any concession 1s yielded buyers take hold with more alacrity, although as a general thing they liuy with great cir cumspection. It has become apparent; however, that goods are not. in excessive stock, and many articles have become so scarce in woolens as to justify a slight advance in prices, 'especially in woolen Shawls, which are worth §3,75a4,00. Flmi Woolens.adapted to men's wear are scarce and firm; lowand medium grades are less sought for, and bring poor prices. Cotton Goods begin to move more freely, especially . Prints, • many styles . of which - have been reduced to 1 shilling, but' they may be higher to-morrow. The whole Secret of the matter is jobbers want to break the price of .Prints so as to buy in a supply and then put up prices at' once; a country dealer, therefore, ought to change his prices on that account, for the break cannot be per manent. She is held at $4,000, cash.- Steamboat bar-keepers, in addition to the dime' bar license, are required to take out a' special Government licenSe for the sale of cigars and tobacco. The additional license is $5 per, annum, making the bar and tobacco license $3O per annum. The tobacco license law took effect on the 20th of last July. —The Levi Leoti has arrived at St. Louis Doin'Fort Benton, haring been 25 days on the trip. She reports three feet water at Doniphan's Rapids, and about the same all the way down to Omaha. She brought $60,000 in treasure, and seven tuns of quartz. The latter is to be shipped to New York. A St. Louis telegram. under date of Wednesday, says: Lizzie Gill, for New Orleans; Girard Allen, for Omaha: Evening Star, for the I%lissouri, and the regular packets for the North. The City of Alton leaves to-day for Alemphis, tlie David Watt. -for 'Tennessee river, and the Rubi con, for Vicksinirg. The river is Hlowly receding, with six and a half feet to. Cairo. Large boats in the New Orleans trade will soon have' o begin towing to enable them to carry out anything like a paying trip. —The Cincinnati Enquirer, is responsible for the following: captain of ':a 'well known New Orleans and Red River packet, sojourning for a brief period in the city, was boasting to a knot of friends on 'Change yesterday of the superior advan- Itages which Southern steamboatmen• had over those running boats up here. "Why,' said he, "the barber on my boat is the State Senator from the Parish in which' live, and twb of the berthrnakers of the boat are Representativs in the Legislature from the saute Parish." This, he assured those who heard him, was not said to give a false and exaggerated idea of the state of things In the South, but was the literal truth. - 1 —Steven Starkey. of New Albany, luta invented a precipitator and feed-water heater. • The Commevcial , describes it in t It not full. We giv a few paragraphs: only heats the water to the same degree '3l' heat as the water in the boiler, thereby preventing suction, expansion and contrac tion, so fatal to the boiler,, but also clears the water of all impurities of every sort. It does away with the forward mnd-drum, and reduces the size of the , stand rum to ten or twelve Inches. It relieves the engi neer from the dirty, tedious job of clean: ing boilers. It is so constructed that it can be cleaned while under way. It is' easier i cleaned when steam is hp than when lying by. The heater is placed on top of the boil ers, thereby taking up as 'little room as a twenty-inch, steam drawer. It is the opin ion of the leading men in this city that it will be impossible to explode or collapse any boiler where this heater is used and the governor valve properly adjusted, un less there is want of water or defective workmanship. __. - Rimers and Weather.
