Grand Rally of the Grant, Glib!' 0 , 11 the
South Side of the Monengaltela.l
About half past seven o'clock lastnight,
the 'citizens living in Birmingham, East.
Bir i mingliam, South Pittsburgh, etc., began
to gather at the place (it meeting-0 the '
south end of the Monongohela Suspenfilon!
Be:idge, whither the inspiring notes of two
bands called them. These two—the
Iron City and Franklin—discoursed patri
otic airs alternately. The yard where the
meeting was held was large and well.filled,
mainly with people from the sotith side.
At eight o'clock the meeting was.called to
.order by the nomination of Mr. Howard B.
Negley for. President, and the reporters
present to act is SeCzetaric
Mr. Kegley introduced Senator James L.
Graham,who was received with uproarious
cheers.
Mr. Graham apologized for having no
prepared 'speech, but he was suffering-so
severely with neura . gia in his head that
he had feared he should not have been able
to, speak at all. He then began to speak to
them as crowds-as large as that of last night
like tabe spolten to, running from subject
to
.subject and ipteispering anecdotes, tel
ling hits. and occasional bursts of , elo
quence that • kept the crowd in alternate
cheers and laughter for. nearly an hour.
He began by sayingthat the issues before
us are so plainly defined that he who runs
may read. We have two'platforms before
uni that of Chicago the exponents of which
are Grant and Colfax; and +. that of
New York on, which Stand Seyrriotir . and
Blair. Between these we are asked to chose—
t etween Gen. Grant (here the speaker drew,
sketch of the General's life)
.and Horatio Seymour. Of Grant,,Wllliam
Wallace. a Demcieratic member ofthe State
Senate, had said, "He is no statesman and, '
therefore,'not fit to - be President,Tor only
from among staiennen and lawyers should
that officer be chosen.", Would American •
,workingmen, every one of whom had been;
told from' his infancy that if the People
-willed it he might one day' be President,
believe this? Horatio .Seymour. is a wily,-
unprinclpled scheming politician not half
so fit to be Chief Magistrate of the nation,
as honest workingman present.", Who
are his *lends, who his supporters?;
'voice; cried "the grey 7 ,backsi!'] Yes;
the grey -bucks; men who' fought - under.;
the rebel rag- when( General ~ G rant
was leading many of those present, toivic-•
tory under the glorious star spangled Pen
ner. Would honest working -men vote AJz.
this silent, hard-fisted, . dosemouthedi-lOyal
man of few words and great deeds; 'this
tanner, who had • tanned bides before the
war, and would now' an'tieymoar hfileak
or for this wily, disloyal scheming,
rebePs•friend Seymour, who addressed the;
bloody handed murderers of women atut
orphans at the New York riots, in 433, as
"My Friends," and said the war cause was
lost on the very same glorious Fourth of
July . when Grant at Vicksburg and
Meade at Gettysburg were leading .their
men to victory? (Cheers fur,Grant) Again,
he warned all voters that many men Would
talk of greenbacks, of finances, of all sorts,
of things, but the true question is between
loyalty and disloyalty, between patriotsm
and treason. Is it possible for any one to
least* for which to decide? Jtrferebern
then touched lightly. on the finances and re
construction question, and wound up by
say ing that negroei have rights as well ss
white ;nett, they have a right to their own
persons and liberty, to be • the fathers of
their children and the husbands of their
wiveaunder the law. The'question is one ,
of equality.. of. rights and not of social
equality, 83 the Democrats say. There are
many white men who he would not want
to sleep with. or marrg his daughter
to, or to
~, eat , at.. his table, and
'lt is the same • with all of us, . and
yet those white men arelegally our equals;
and In conclusion howould,promise that if
all present.would promise to vote for Grant
and colfax, If next winter, when-he hi at
Harrisburg, . they will 'get np a petiton to
that - effect he will try tepees it, making it
a law that, any negro %yogi= consenting to
