The general rate for call loans was .4 per

Prime - paper in fair snpply at 7 per cent.
Sterling very quiet at 109©1093.1 for best
bills. Gold lowerand weak, opening at
145g,advanced to )141%, fell to 144%, and
closed at 144%. The rumors of shipments
from abroad had sidepiessing effect, and a
large amount of short contracts were also;
covered this morning, hence the naction.
Oash gold is also very plenty, and loans
were made at 3(0 per cent. for carrying.

The stock market is quiet except on New
York Central and Erie, which fluctuated
considerably, the former closing firm'and
the latter dull. St. Paul advanced 4®5 per
cent:, and some parties sold them short to a
moderato extent. There is no importance
attache I to the injunction granted yester
day,As all the points involved have already
been decided by the United States Supreme
Court favorably to the Company: The rest
of the . market is dull, closing steady.

Now Yonx, August 25.—The Dry Goods
market is more active, especially for fine
woolens and cottons, which are being
offered at comparatively low prices. For
instance, the Narragansett prints, which
have been reduced to one shilling per yard,
find a ready sale, as do Briggs & Co.'s at
12 1 ,4 and Bedford at 9. Sprague's prints
have been reduced to 13%, previous to the
removal of agents, and the goods are in
active request at the decline, but other
prints hold their own, at 13% for American,
Aliens and Richmond. Heavy sheetings a
little depressed, the a andard price rang
ing from 16a17 1 ,4c; very good brands are
selling at lower rates. Sappia - cloth com
mands 35; Glace Artnures, Delaines,
20. Hartford gingbams, in plain fast
colors, 16%; Glasgow, 17.

RIVER NEWS.
The river is about stationary at this
point, while the weather is warm and
pleasant through the ditY, ,and cool at
night.
The Argosy, Capt. Lew, Vatidergrift,left
Cincinnati on Monday morning for Kana
wha river, with.two model barges in tow,
to bring out WO tuns railroad'] iron for the
Henderson and Edgefield road.
In charging the Grand Jury in the Uni
ted States District Court, yesterday morn
ing, Judge McCandless stated that he had
received a communication frOm the Board
of Local Inspectors of this port. complain
ing of the manner in which the boats of
the rival lines of Monongahela river pack
ets were run, and the obstructions caused
to navigation thereby. The Inspectors re
ferred to the fact that on one occasion
the 10/ks at Dam No. I were obstructed for
sever l hours, and stated that such pro
ceedings were not uncommon. They also
stated that passengeri were placed in Im
minent danger in consequence of thP Prac
tiee f racing which was daily indulged in.

Jud .1, McCandless read the letter' of 'the
Ins ectors, and commented at some length.
He referred to the laws governing the
nay agtion cif the rivers, and also et the
ris s which passengers were forced to as
sun e by'the officers of the boats in the
es ts to break down competing lines. He
lust acted the Grand Jury to make a care
ful inquiry l into the matter, and to make
such presentment on the subject as, wider
the law, they might deem proper to re
move the cause of complaint.!
—The Edinburg , has laid up at Marietta
on aocount of low water.
—Capt. Anawalt, of the Wild Duck
Barges, is at Cinoinnati having repairs
made.
. —captain W. D. Phillips left Louisville
Wednesday for Cairo, to take charge of the
Louisiana.
'—The Coosa has been chartered by Ames
t Chambers' circus, which wilt take the
river at Louisville, and go up to the Kan
awha.
—lt is announced that Bart. Able,Wil
liam M. McPherson, John Bofinger, and
other well-known Bt. Louis steamboatmen,
will run a number of boats, including the
Mollie Able, Lizzie Gill, Bismarck, Com
monwealth and Great Republic between
St. Louis and New Orleans.
—Rafts are tied up at various points on the
Upper Mississippi above the Sycamore
chaittof the cotter dam at Rock Island, be
cause the pilots fear they cannot get them
through the raft channel. The Davenport
Gazette says the steamer Enterprise makes
the channel every day "with tons of
freight."

—Capt. Henry Shillito, formerly of the
Alabama River packet Jewess, has con
tracted with MediSon builders fora-steam
er for the Alabama River.. She will be 170
feet long, 33 feet beam, 30 feet floor, 534
feet hold. She will have three boilers and
two engines, with twenty-inch cylinders,
five and a half feet stroke.
—Captain Asbury of the Andy Johnson
was heard to say, at all events John Coll
says so, that if the Phil. Sheridan ever suc
ceeded in' passing his• boat under way, be
would debase himself by raking coal at
Quincy. The aforesaid Go 1 informs us of
the sequel, that the feat of passing under
way was done at Rhode's Point, during the
last run of the boats, and thitt Morris, the
Quincy coalman, has ready for the delicate
hands of Asbury a rake etithelielied with a

nati Commercial, telegraphs as follows:
