In gold a firmer feeling was manifested
to day, butin the absence of any uncov
ered short sales, the market is barely sus
tained, and the whole course of the market
points towards lower %notations.
Government securities are only sus
tained by the yet comparativelY low rates
for call loans; the large • dealerS are not
disposed I to cover and look for lower
prices. The investment demand is light,
except some small orders from the coun
try, and before large capitalists take hold
oftliem, the market must have declined at
least one per cent. yet.
The stock market is weak and unsettled;
the partial advance this forenoon has been
lost again in the afternoon, and the
swindling operations of the Erie directors
cannot fail to affect the general market to
a further degree. It is stated on good au
thority that Erie has not yet touched its
lowest point, and that it may see the thir
ties before a reaction will take place.'' All
those who calculate on 69 again will have
to await a long time before confidence is
restored. The purehithe of the sound steam
ers and the lease of the roads connecting 1
with Boston, also the issue of four millions 1
of new stock may all be false, and if the
directors can put the stock low enough and
clean out all the wall speculators for a
while they will let it drop still further.
Business; is dull. Money is still easy.

CRUDE—The market has been dull and
panicky throughout the last week, and
to-day has been no exception to those pre
ceeding it. There was but a single sale re
ported, 1,000 bbls, to be delivered between
the first and 20th of September, seller's-op
tion, at 13c. Later in the day this figure
could not have been realized for that de
livery, though we do not believe that any
sellers could have been found below; in
deed, there isbut little oil offering, either
for present or future. All the year, seller's
option, is offered at 12%c, without finding
takers—yesterday there was h , a sale of 1,000.
each month from September to December,
inclusive, at 13c. The asking price at Oil
Citpto-day was 35, though we heard it in
timated that a plump offer of 3.4,50 would
doubtless have met with a favorable re
sponse. Upon the whole, the market has
been in a very sickly and complicated con
dition all week. and while the decline thus
far has not been very great; the teridencY,
nevertheless, appears to be strongly down
ward.
REFINED—There has been considerable
excitement in Refined during . the past two
or.three days.'and while the market has
been constantly fluctuating, the tendency,
as a general thing, has been downward,
and some of the strongest bulls have be
come a [little weak in the knees, while the
bears have bad it pretty much their own
way. The-sales for the last half of August
have- been quite large, aggregating nine
thousand barrels in one day, and the price
for that delivery declined during the week
from 33% to 31y,c, at which figure it was
offered this atternoon, without finding •
buyers. The late months have also de
clined in nearly the same ratio, and even
at the decline, the demand is by no means.
urgent, and buyers are scarce. The. Sales ,
to-day Were: 500 bbls first half October at
32c; 600 last half Septeinber at 320: 1,000
: August at 31lic; 500 last half October at 32,
laud 1,000 each for September, October,. No
vember and Decembher, on private terms.
Late last evening a shrewd operator who
had a blight indez-of what was coming, sold
a "line'? of 500 each for September, October
and November, at 32%c.

In general merchandise there is but lit
tle that is new or important; the volume of
business, in the aggregate, seems to be in
creasing somewhat, The demand for al
most everything is entirely of a consump
tive character, there being an almost en
tirej absence of anything like a speculative
feeling, and,'as y consequense the transac
tions are mainly of a retail character.
BUTTER—There is a steady demand,
and we can report regular sales of prime to
choice fresh packed at 33 to 36c.
EGGS—DuII and unchanged at 14 to 15e,
CHEESE—Is quiet and unchanged at 14
to 15c for Western Reserve and Hamburg;
16-to 17c for Factory, and 19 to 110 e for
Sweitzer.
SEEDS Sales of Flaxseed at $2,25, and
Timothy at 53,25. Clover seed is nominal
at 57,50 to $B.
SALT—Is dell and unchanged at :51,75 to
51,80. to the trade, for Allegheny River
brands and $2 for small lots in store.
GRAIN4-Wheat remains unchanged
here, notwithstanding it is tumbling in al
most every direction; in Chicago it has de
clined from 12 to 15 cents per bushel with
in the last day or two, and the decline is
accounted fer by heavy- receipts. We con
tinue to quote at 52,10 to 52,15 for Red and
52,15 to 52,20 for White, and the outside
quotation_can only be realized for choice..
New Oats continue to arrive freely, 'and
while the market is a little heavy, prices
are unchanged-60 in first hands, and 63 to
65 for small lots. Corn of which the sup
ply is light, is firm but' unchanged; Shelled
is quoted at 51,06 to 51,12 for mixed to
prime Yellow. Ear Corn is selling in•store:
at(sl.l4 to 51,16. New Rye is in good de
rohdd at 51,35, and there is little or none
offering. Barley continues quiet; we are
cognizant of some receipts from the west,
which it is said will cost about .51,70 here;
prime Penna. and Ohio Barley, would
doubtless command 51,75, and possibly
51,80.
MILL FEED—The mill prices are un
changed, as follows; Screenings $1; Bran
$1,10; Shipstuffs $1,30; and Middlings $2,20.
HAY—Is still quoted at $2O to $3O from
country wagons, as to quality.
GREEN APPLES—The market is pretty
well glutted and prices are barely main
tained, ranging f rom $3 to $4 per bbl, for
good to prime..
POTATOES—In rather better demand
but unchanged at 63.50 to $3,75 per bbl. •
PROVISIONS—Bacon is in steady de
mand and firm, but with the exception of
Shoulders. which are a shade higher,
prices remain unchanged; we now quote at
at 14 1 4 to 1434 for Shoulders; 1634 to
16x tor . Ribbed and 18% to 1834 for Clear
Sides; and V. to 22% for Sugar Cured Hams.
Lard, 193, to 20, for prime kettle rendered:
Mess Pork. $3O to $30.50.
LARD OIL—Is firm but unchanged at
$1,20 for No. 2, and 1;1,50 for No. 1. •
FLOUR—The market is moderately ac
tive, there being a fair local demand, and
prices are unchanged at $10.50 to $10,75 for
choice old Spring Wheat, and $ll to $11,50
for Winter Wheat. The mills report a good"
business at the recent advance: Double
Extra, in barrels, $11,30, and in sacks, $11:
Extra Family, $lO,BO, in barrels, and $10,50,
in sacks. Rye Flour. $9,25 for old.
