THURSDAY, August 20, 1868. 8
.
The gold market was very , weak at the '
close of the board, selling from 144%d0wn
.
to 143%. The short , interest being' much
reduced, and money being dearer; lower
rates are likely to be made-during the next
few days; also on September first some five
millions of gold are coming into market
for interest of ten-fOrty bonds, the bulls
will have bard work to sustain the market.
Government bonds are still very , dull
and foreign,bankers are no longer buyers;
a large short interest is still uncovered by
the large dealears which would indicate
that lower prices are expected. -
The stock market is weak in tone, al
though quotations favor a rise. 'Erie is
.
moving in independently of the market,
and looks still very dull and weak. Vari
ous rumors are circulated that commodore
Vanderbilt had sold - out, and that the stock
was good for nothing. The balance of the
list is slightly improved.
The New York Stock quotations to-day
as received by Mr. Ph. R. Mertz, were as
follows: .Gold 143%; 1881's, 113 g; 5-20's,
1862, 113; do 1864, 10836; do 1865, 111; do
new, 107%; do 1867, 10/36; 10-40's 108%;
Cleveland 5: Pittsburgh 85%; Fort Wayne,
10636; Western Union Telegraph • s3t;
Adams Express, 4736; Erie, 35g. New York
Central, 125; Reading, 89%; Michigan
Southern, 82%; Chicago & Rock Island,
89%; Chicago it North Western, 80;0 do
Preferred, 80%.
' —The failure which was reported in New
York last week turns out to be that of
Isett,Kerr Jr. Co., brokers and bankers
with western connections. We believe one
member of the firm was forrnerly from
lowa. Their liabilities are not stated.

CRUDE--The market was , considerably' ~
excited- and panicky -to4lay, and with a
pretty strong disposition to sell prices ruled
lower. The sales were: 'l,OOO bbls August,
seller, 13 1 4; 1,000 each Septenaber and Octo- •
ber at 133;; : 1,000 Immediate, private terms;
1,000 until December Ist, seller, at 123:; , • '.
and 1,000 same delivery and option, at 123.4- -.
The great proportion of the above sales
were reported as having been made early
in the day, as in the afternoon the samefig
ores could , hardly have been realized.
Spot oil would not have brought' over 13
cents, and we donbt whether. September
and October would have brought,over 13,14,
if that. Oil City parties :were 'willing - to
sell either for immediate or next month
at 55, delivered on cars, but there were - no
buyers. -tinite
REFINED—There was a anic in
. p
the market for Refined oil, and prices cool- _
pared with yesterday, have declined from
one to one and a tali' cents. To illustrate,
August which sold yesterday at from 33 to
323;, sold to-day at trona 31% to 31; and Au
vst and September Which brought 34 to
33.1, sold to-day at 32%, with only 32 bid at ,
the close. The sales.were:24ooo, in lots, for
last - half August, seller, at 31 1 ,44 . 500 at_ 31g;
500 at 31g; and 500 at 31; 500 for September
"at 32; and 500 each for•Septeimbei and Coto
ber"at 32%. .As will be seen from the
above the "bears" had it pretty much all
their own way, and, as a ecmseatenfaia; . the
"bulls" were very sick, though they.enter
tain hones that the present movement will
soon be checked, and a reaction set in. •
